Ohio Women's Basketball Falls Short in a Miami Heartbreaker

ATHENS, OH.–
The Ohio Women's Basketball Team (6-22, 4-13 MAC) returned to the Convocation Center for the Battle of the Bricks against the Miami RedHawks (12-18, 7-10 MAC) on March 1st. The contest between the two Mid-American Conference schools is not their first of the season, and the Bobcats were out to keep their winning streak against Miami. After a hard battle, the Bobcats fell to the RedHawks 81-75. Overall, Ohio was led by sophomore Yaya Felder (Hartford, Conn.) with 32 points, freshman Jaya McClure (Louisville, Ky.) with 13 points, and redshirt junior Jasmine Hale (Cincinnati, Ohio) with 12 points. 

Overall, the Ohio Bobcats went 29-of-62 (46.8%) from the field, 9-of-27 (33.3%) from the three, 8-of-12 (66.7%) from the line, snagged 25 rebounds, grabbed six steals, and collected 12 assists.

From the jump, the RedHawks grabbed the ball and immediately challenged the Bobcats' defense, but Ohio fought back, gaining an early lead. Offensively, the Bobcats were led by Jaya McClure with 10 points, giving her double figures in scoring within the first 10 minutes of play. Yaya Felder followed with four points and on the defensive side, the Bobcats snagged a total of 9 rebounds, seven defensive and two offensive and grabbed two steals. A highlight of the quarter was a steal made by junior Kailah Johnson (Holland, Ohio), which led to a 3-point jumper. Going into the second quarter, Ohio led by four points setting the score 19-15. 

Entering the second quarter, the Bobcats continued to hold a strong offense and defense against the RedHawks. The quarter was led by Jasmine Hale with 10 points, giving her double figures in scoring in the second 10 minutes of play, Felder followed with nine points. Offensive highlights of the quarter was a steal and driving layup made by Felder, and a layup in the paint by freshman Cassidy Lafler (Dublin, Ohio) assisted by McClure. Defensively, sophomore Aja Austin (Westerville, Ohio) grabbed three of Ohio's five rebounds in the quarter. Going into the locker room, Ohio led by seven points against Miami, putting the score 42-35. 

Coming out of the locker room, the RedHawks challenged Ohio's defense to try and close the score gap between the two MAC schools. The Bobcats continued to press back on defense, snagging eight rebounds and one steal. Offensively, the quarter was led in scoring by Felder with eight points. Ending the third quarter, Kailah Johnson scored a driving layup to give the Bobcats a one point lead of 55-54 going into the final 10 minutes of play. 

In the final ten minutes of play, the Bobcats continued to press on defense against Miami to keep the scoring gap between the two MAC schools in their favor. But Ohio ultimately fell to the Miami RedHawks 81-75, after a challenging fourth quarter.
