
Ohio Women's Golf Takes 12th Place in the Falcon Florida Classic

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLORIDA -- The Ohio Women's Golf team finished up their final rounds of the Falcon Florida Classic earlier today (Feb. 7). The Bobcats competed at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club and placed 12th overall. The Falcon Classic began on Monday morning (Feb. 6), consisting of three rounds and 54 holes over the course of two days. The Bobcats concluded the tournament with a final score of 914 (+50). Breaking down their score further, Ohio ended round 1 with 299 points, round 2 with 308 points, and finished out the third and final today with a score of 307 points.Â

The two-day tournament consisted of multiple teams: Northern Illinois, Idaho, Toledo, Illinois State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Bowling Green, Ball State, Western Illinois, Akron, and Eastern Michigan. The competition held strong in Florida and was a great wasy for the Bobcats to kick off their spring season. Coach Kelly Ovington comments, "It was amazing to be competing again. We definitely saw some big improvements on things we were working on over the winter but we also have several takeaways that we know we need to improve before our upcoming events. Overall, the team played well and we are excited to get to work before the next event."
Individually, Ohio was led by sophomore Sydney Longstreth (Carmel, IN.) in the Falcon Florida Classic placing 22nd overall, with a score of 223 (+7). Her score for the first round of play was 74, her second round score was 73, and she finished out round 3 with a score of 76. Sophomore, Thanya Arasu (St. Johns, FL.) followed for Ohio in 37th place with an accumulated score of 226 (+10). Arasu shot an impressive 71 in the first round, followed by 78 in round 2, and finished round 3 with a score of 78. Freshman Mackenzie McRee (Tucson, AZ) came in third for the Bobcats and 51st overall with a final score of 232 (+16). McRee shot a 77 back to back in rounds 1 and 2, then finished out with a score of 78 in round 3. Up next for Ohio was senior Avery Ovens (Wiloughby Hills, OH), in 65th place with a score of 237 (+21). Ovens recorded a 77 in round 1 and an 80 in rounds 2 and 3. Finishing out for the Bobcats was Junior Mariana Vega-Rivera (Reynoldsburg, OH). Mariana had a final score of 239 (+23) and shot an 81 in round 1, an 82 in round 2, and finished out with her strongest score of 76 in the third and final round.
Competing as an individual was Sophomore Sloane Post (Centennial, CO.), shooting an overall score of 236 (+20). The breakdown of her score was 78 in round 1, and 79 in round two and three. Post was in 62nd place overall.Â

The first-place golfer for the 2023 Falcon Florida Classic was Northern Illinois' Sydney Naro, recording an impressive score of 206 (-10), helping carry her team to the first overall spot with a total score of 850 (-14).

For the Bobcats second tournament of the spring season they will head to Rio Verde, Arizona on Friday February 24th. Here they will compete in the three day Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational against several competitive MAC teams, including host team, Western Michigan.Â
