OXFORD, Ohio – Junior
Ami Hornyak was crowned the champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, as the Ohio swimming and diving team continued action for day three at the 2023 Mid-American Conference Championships inside the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center on the campus of Miami. After day three, Ohio sits in fourth place with 341 points.
Hornyak (Debrecen, Hungary) was crowned MAC champion, finishing first with a time of 59.89. She became Ohio's first individual champion since 2015 and the first champion in the event in 2001. Hornyak also tied the Miami pool record in her finish.
In the first event of the night, junior
Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio) placed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a personal best time of 53.19, shaving off 0.35 seconds from her preliminary time this morning.
In the 400-yard IM, freshman
Emily Ellsworth picked up a fourth-place finish, touching in with a time of 4:19.40, dropping 2.11 off her prelim time. She was followed by junior
Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) with an eighth-place finish and a time of 4:25.59. Sophomore
Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.) finished in second in the 'B' final and 10
th overall, finishing the race in 4:23.78, dropping 6.03 off her time from this morning.
In the 200 free, senior
Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio) placed fifth with a time of 1:48.25, followed by senior
McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) who touched in just behind her in sixth place with a time of 1:48.27. Freshman
Lauren Hartel (Arlington, Va.) finished 12
th overall with a time of 1:49.92, while freshman
Anna McGrath finished 14
th in 1:50.34.
In the rest of the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman
Casadie DiBetta (St. Clairsville, Ohio) finished fourth with a time of1:01.44, while sophomore
Julia Strine (Shippensburg, Pa.) placed seventh with a time of 1:02.22. Sophomore
Edie Sawyer (Cranberry Township, Pa.) earned a 10
th-place finish, touching in at 1:02.85.
In the 100-yard backstroke, freshman
Allison Schrank (Blaine, Minn.) finished 11
th in 55.10, while junior
Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) finished 14
th in 55.54. Graduate student
Athena Aravantinou (North Bethesda, Md.) finished 15
th with a time of 55.59.
In the final event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Schrank, Hornyak, Brust and junior
Caroline Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa.) finished tied for third with a time of 3:38.26.
The Bobcats wrap up competition at the 2023 MAC Championships on Saturday, Feb. 25, with prelims set for 10:30 a.m. and the finals of the 1650 free set to start at 4:10 p.m.
