ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (4-5, 2-2 MAC) returned to action Friday afternoon (Oct. 6) for a battle with Mid-American Conference leading Miami (9-5, 4-0 MAC), falling to the RedHawks, 3-1 at Pruitt Field.
Overall, Miami scored three goals on 18 shots with 13 on goal and 10 penalty corners, while Ohio scored one goal on nine shots with two on goal and six penalty corners.
Offensively, Ohio was led sophomore
Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) with one goal on one shot, while senior
Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.) added an assist on four shots with one on goal. Junior
Bodhi Littlefield (Oakland, Maine), graduate student
Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.), fifth year
Weslee Littlefield (Oakland, Maine) and sophomore
Anouk Plaehn (Hanover, Germany) all added shots for the Bobcats.
In the cage, senior
Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) allowed three goals and registered 10 saves on 18 shots faced.
Miami opened the first quarter with the offensive pressure, recording the first four shots of the match over the first five minutes. The RedHawks also recorded three penalty corners, one of which resulted in a goal that was waived off, before Ohio registered a corner and a shot from Plaehn, sending the game to the second period with it knotted at 0-0.
Ohio opened the second half with the first attempt when a shot from
Weslee Littlefield that was blocked. Both teams were held off the score sheet until the 24
th minute when Miami scored off a corner, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
At the half, Ohio recorded two shots with none on goal and had one corner, while Miami had one goal on nine shots with seven on goal and seven corners.
Miami added on early in the third period, taking a 2-0 lead in the 32
nd minute. After the Miami goal, Ohio put on the pressure in the offensive zone, getting three-straight corners, however, the Bobcats' offense was unable to get the ball to the cage, keeping the RedHawks' lead at 2-0.
The Bobcats got on the board in the final minute of the third period when Dikotla scored with an assist from Kopp off Ohio's third corner of the period, cutting the Miami lead to 2-1 going into the final period of play.
Miami looked to add on in the early part of the fourth quarter, however, Lotze made two-straight saves to hold the RedHawks off the board, keeping the Bobcats' deficit at 2-1 with 10 minutes to go in the game.
After the Bobcats had back-to-back chances on corners, Miami retook a two-goal lead after they connected a penalty stroke to go up 3-1 in the 55
th minute. After Miami added on, Ohio was unable to generate much offense over the remaining minutes, falling by the final of 3-1.
