BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ohio men's basketball team (8-7, 0-2 MAC) continued Mid-American Conference play on Saturday evening, falling to Bowling Green (8-7, 2-0 MAC), 88-79, inside the Stroh Center.
"Give them a lot of credit," head coach
Jeff Boals said. "88 points obviously that's way too many give up on the road to win. But, you know, first half we had too many turnovers, which led to some easy points, but we were 44-40, The start of the second half wasn't ideal, you know, you got to get that momentum going. We battled back like we've been doing and tied up last war, but we couldn't close it out."
Overall, Ohio shot 44.3 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from three and were 15-of-21 from the line, while Bowling Green shot 49.2 percent from the field, 43.5 percent from three and were 16-of-20 from the line. Ohio outrebounded the Falcons, 41-33, however the Bobcats turned the ball over 14 times, allowing BGSU to score 21 points off them.
Individually, graduate student forward
Dwight Wilson III (Tallahassee, Fla.) led Ohio with 17 points and 17 rebounds, going 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from the line. Freshman guard
AJ Brown (Orlando, Fla.) scored 17 points, going 6-of-16 from the field and 3-of-8 from three, Senior guard
DeVon Baker (Dayton, Ohio) added 10 points, while senior guard
Miles Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) scored nine points.
Ohio won the tip and got on the board first with a jumper from
AJ Brown. After a three from BGSU put them up one, a layup from
AJ Brown and a three from junior guard
Jaylin Hunter (Manchester, Conn.) gave the Bobcats a four-point lead. After the Falcons retook the lead, a three from sophomore forward
AJ Clayton (Roseville, Ohio) put Ohio up two, before a jumper from the Falcons tied the game at 10-10 going into the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, BGSU went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-10 lead, however a three from senior forward
Ben Roderick (Powell, Ohio) stopped the run. After the Falcons got two free throw to go up 17-13, the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run of their own, thanks to six-straight points from Baker, giving Ohio a 20-17 lead with 11:03 remaining in the half.
Bowling Green then went on a 5-0 run with a jumper and a three to take a two-point lead. After a layup from Hunter tied the game at 22-22, four-straight points from the Falcons helped give BGSU the 28-24 lead going into the under-eight media timeout. Out of the timeout, Ohio closed the gap to two with free throws from
Miles Brown, however Bowling Green hit three-straight threes to take a 36-28 lead, forcing Ohio to burn a timeout with 5:32 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats responded, going on a 7-0 run that was highlighted by an
AJ Brown three, cutting the Bowling Green lead to 36-35 going into the final media timeout. Bowling Green came out of the timeout with a 4-0 run, before a three from
Miles Brown cut the lead to one again. However, after the Falcons took a 44-38 lead, a jumper from
AJ Brown cut the Ohio deficit to 44-40 going into halftime.
At the half, Ohio shot 48.4 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three and were 5-of-6 from the line, While Bowling Green shot 60 percent from the field, 60 percent from three and were 2-of-2 from the line. Ohio outrebounded BGSU, 18-11, while Ohio turned the ball over eight times, allowing BGSU to score 14 points off them.
Individually,
AJ Brown led with nine points, Hunter added seven points, and Wilson III grabbed nine rebounds.
To open the second half, the Falcons took a seven-point lead. After Wilson III cut the deficit to five, five-straight points from BGSU put the Falcons up 10 going into the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, the Falcons went up 12, however a Wilson III layup and a
Miles Brown free throw started to cut into the lead. A three and a layup from Roderick cut the deficit to 56-51, but a three from Bowling Green put the Falcons back up eight. The Bobcats then went on a 5-0 run with a three from
Miles Brown, bringing Ohio within three with 11:50 remaining in the game.
After a layup and a free throw from freshman guard
Elmore James (Cleveland, Ohio) tied the game at 59-59, the Falcons went back up four after free throw and a layup. Moments later, a three from Baker cut the deficit to one, before a layup from junior center
Gabe Wiznitzer (Walhalla, S.C.) gave Ohio the 64-63 lead with 8:47 remaining. After forcing a turnover, a three from
AJ Brown put Ohio up four, however a layup from the Falcons cut the lead to two going into the under-eight media timeout. Out of the media, Bowling Green took a one-point lead, however
AJ Brown followed up with another three to give Ohio a two-point lead again. After free throws from Wilson III increased the Bobcats' lead back to four, BGSU was able to cut the lead to 72-71 with 3:43 remaining in the game.
Out of the media timeout, two free throws and a three from Bowling Green gave the Falcons back the lead, 76-72, with 3:22 remaining, forcing an Ohio timeout. After BGSU hit another three to take a seven-point lead, Ohio was able to cut the deficit to five with free throws from Wilson III and
AJ Brown. However, Bowling Green was able to hit their free throws down the stretch, not allowing Ohio to get closer, falling 88-79.
For Bowling Green, Kaden Metheny scored 25 points, going 5-of-9 from three, while Rashaun Agee scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Up next, Ohio returns to Athens on Saturday, Jan. 10 to take on Ball State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
