Ohio Softball Falls to Western Michigan Saturday Afternoon

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (22-23, 16-10 MAC) returned to action on Saturday, falling two Western Michigan (21-32, 12-15 MAC) in a doubleheader. Ohio dropped game one, 2-0, before falling in game two, 10-5. 
 
GAME ONE: Western Michigan 2, Ohio 0 
Overall, Ohio did not score a run on three hits and committed two errors, while WMU scored two runs on eight hits and committed one error. 
 
At the plate, fifth year Megan McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) recorded two hits, while fifth year Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) registered Ohio's other hit. 
 
Western Michigan got on the board first in the top of the first inning, scoring a run on two hits and one error. Ohio threatened in the bottom of the frame. After Englant reached on a leadoff hit, she then stole second. Englant advanced to third on a base hit from McMenemy, however, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the second inning with Ohio trailing, 1-0. 
 
After a scoreless second and third inning, Ohio threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. McMenemy led the inning off with her second hit of the game. After sophomore Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) entered to run for her and moved to second on a passed ball. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the fifth inning with Ohio still trailing, 1-0. 
 
WMU threatened to add on in the top of the fifth inning. After getting runners on first and second with one out, the Ohio offense was able tot get a fly out and starting pitcher senior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) was able to strike out the final batter of the inning looking, keeping the second a one-run game going to the bottom of the fifth. 
 
Ohio threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, sophomore Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) drew a walk and moved to second when McMenemy reached on an error, putting runners on first and second with one out. However, the WMU defense was about to get out of the jam, sending the game to the seventh with Ohio trailing 1-0. 
 
WMU added a run in the top of the seventh inning, scoring one run on one two hits, taking a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the frame. Ohio was unable to generate any offense in the seventh inning, falling to the Broncos, 2-0. 
 
In the circle, Kohl pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits, walked one and struck out five. 
 
GAME TWO: WMU 10, Ohio 5
Overall, Ohio scored five runs on eight hits and committed two errors, while WMU scored 10 runs on 12 hits and did not commit an error.
 
Individually, sophomore Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with four RBI, a homerun and a run scored, while Englant went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) added a homerun, RBI and run scored, while McMenemy, senior Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) and graduate student Tori Walker (Plain City, Ohio) all added hits. 
 
The Bobcats struck first in the bottom of the first inning. After Englant reached on a leadoff hit, she then stole second and advanced to third on a hit from McMenemy. The Bobcats then took its first lead of the day when Paoli reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Englant to score, giving the Bobcats the early 1-0 lead. 
 
WMU struck in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs on four hits and one error, taking a 5-1 lead to the third inning. 
 
Ohio threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning after Paoli reached first with a hit to lead off the inning. However, she would be replaced on the bases by senior Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) on a fielder's choice. Moments later, Fogue moved to second when Walker drew a walk, however, Ohio was unable to come up with the clutch hit, sending the game to the fifth with the Bobcats trailing, 5-1. 
 
Ohio cut the WMU lead to one in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Yuhas reached base on a walk after a 15-pitch at bat, she moved to second when McMenemy drew a walk. Moments later, Paoli crushed a three-run homerun to left field, cutting the Broncos' lead to 5-4 going into the sixth inning. 

WMU got the runs back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on four hits, including a three-run homerun to take a 9-4 lead going into the bottom of the frame. Ohio got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Yuhas hit a two-out solo homerun to left field, cutting the WMU lead to 9-5. 
 
WMU got the run back in the top of the seventh, scoring on an RBI single, retaking the five-run lead going into the final frame. Ohio was unable to get a rally going in the bottom of the seventh, falling 10-5. 
 
In the circle, junior Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched seven innings, allowing 10 runs, five earned, on 12 hits, walked three and struck out four.

The Bobcats wrap up the regular season on Sunday, May 8. First pitch is set for Noon at the Ohio Softball Field.
