TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (22-21, 16-8 MAC) returned to action Wednesday (May 4), sweeping Toledo (12-37, 5-21 MAC) in a doubleheader in Toledo. The Bobcats took game one, 12-8, before taking game two, 5-4,
GAME ONE: Ohio 12, Toledo 8
Overall, Ohio scored 12 runs on 11 hits and committed four errors, while Toledo scored eight runs on 11 hits and committed one error.
Individually, sophomore
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with a homerun, walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while graduate student
Megan McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) had two hits and two runs scored. Fifth year
Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) registered a grand slam and four RBI, while sophomore
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also hit a homerun and had two RBI and two runs scored. Fifth year
Allie Englant (Long Beach Calif.) had one hit, two runs scored, RBI and drew two walks, while senior
Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) had a hit and a run scored.
Ohio struck first in the top of the first inning. After Englant walked to open the game and then stole second, Logan hit a homerun to put the Bobcats up 2-0 with no outs. Ohio added on when Spacek came to bat with the bases loaded and singled to center, scoring McMenemy and giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead going to the bottom of the frame.
Toledo got on the board in the bottom of the frame, cutting the Ohio to two after a bases loaded walk, sending the game to the second with the Bobcats leading, 3-1. The Rockets added another run in the bottom of the second, scoring on an error to cut the Ohio lead to 3-2.
The Bobcats got the run back and then some in the top of the third inning when Rice hit a one-out grand slam, giving the Bobcats a 7-2 lead going to the bottom of the frame. Toledo then added two runs on the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on four hits, while leaving the bases loaded to send the game to the fourth with the Bobcats leading, 7-4.
Ohio added on in the top of the fifth inning when Fogue scored on an RBI single from Englant, putting the Bobcats up 8-4. Toledo went on to cut the Ohio lead to one in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on two hits and two errors, making the score 8-7 going to the top of the seventh.
The Bobcats added some insurance in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Englant and Logan drew walks, allowing for an RBI single from McMenemy. Moments later, Paoli hit a three-run homerun to give Ohio a 12-7 lead going into the bottom of the frame.
Toledo attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, recording two triples and scoring one run, however, the Bobcats would get the final batter of the inning to fly out, sealing the 12-8 victory.
In the circle, senior
Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched seven innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits, walked six and struck out five.
GAME TWO: Ohio 5, Toledo 4
Overall, Ohio scored five runs on nine hits and committed one error, while Toledo scored four runs on nine hits and committed one error.
Individually, Englant went 2-for-4 and scored one run, while Paoli hit another homerun and recorded three RBI and a run scored. Rice registered a hit and an RBI, while Logan, McMenemy, Spacek, Fogue and freshman
Reagan Farmer (Baltimore, Ohio) all registered hits for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats truck first in the top of the first inning once again. After Englant and Logan all reached on singles, Englant scored on an error giving Ohio a 1-0 lead. Then after McMenemy reached on a base hit, Paoli hit a three-run homerun, giving Ohio a 4-0 lead going to the bottom of the inning.
Toledo cut the Ohio lead in half in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on two hits and one error. The Rockets added on in the bottom of the second, scoring on a wild pitch, cutting the Ohio lead to 4-3 going to the third inning.
Toledo tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single, knotting the game at 4-4.
Ohio retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Spacek and Fogue singed to put runners on first and second. Moments later, Rice singled to left, allowing Spacek to score, putting Ohio up 5-4 going to the bottom of the frame.
Toledo thratned to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, leading the bases with two outs. However, the Ohio defense was able to retire the final batter, sealing the 5-4 victory.

Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits, while walking three and striking out three.

The Bobcats wrap up the 2022 regular season this weekend, May 7-8 when the Bobcats host Western Michigan for a three-game series at the Ohio Softball Field.
