MUNCIE, Ind.—The Ohio baseball team (26-21, 18-14 MAC) split the day against Ball State (34-17, 28-7 MAC), losing their third game, 16-6, and winning the final game, 15-10.
GAME ONE
The Cardinals jumped ahead early, scoring 10 runs in the first two innings. Fifth year
Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) put the Bobcats on the board in the third, hitting a home run to left field.
Ohio kicked off the fourth with back-to-back homers from fifth year
Colin Kasperbauer (Sioux City, Iowa) and senior
Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.). A single from graduate student
Cael Baker (Gahana, Ohio) and double from freshman
Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) left the Bobcats trailing 10-6 heading into the bottom of the inning. Ball State tacked on three runs in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth, inclement weather delayed the game. Play resumed today (May 15) at 10 a.m., picking up with the Bobcats trailing 13-6. In the bottom of the sixth, a solo home run, single extended Ball State's lead to ten runs. After a scoreless top of the seventh, the game ended and Ohio fell, 16-6.
GAME TWO
After Peterson led off with a walk, redshirt freshman
AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) put the Bobcats ahead 2-0 with a home run. Later that inning, a Baker single drove in two additional runs. The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs off a home run and an error.
A Kasperbauer single in the second gave Ohio a 5-2 lead, but a Ball State home run in the bottom of the inning tied the game, 5-5. The next inning, Ball State registered their third homer of the game, giving them a one-run lead.
Ohio rallied in the fourth, taking a three-run lead with a single from Kasperbauer, a triple from senior
Will Sturek (Minnetonka, Minn.) and a wild pitch. They continued to build on their lead in the fifth, scoring their 10
thrun when Baker hit a home run to left field and again when Kasperbauer registered another RBI single. Another Cardinal homer in the bottom of the fifth and two RBI singles in the sixth cut into Ohio's lead to one run.
The Bobcats quickly bounced back, scoring two insurance runs in the seventh with a Minzey double and a single from redshirt senior
Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.). Kasperbauer and Sturek rounded out the scoring in the eighth with a flyout and double, respectively, putting the final score at 15-10.
Individually, Peterson went 4-for-6 with a double, triple and four runs, Kasperbauer went 4-for-5 with four RBIs while Sturek went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. On the mound, senior
Braxton Kelly (Ulysses, Ky.) was awarded the win with 2.1 innings pitched and two hits allowed.
