ATHENS, Ohio-- The Ohio softball team (7-15, 1-2) was defeated by Ohio State (18-5) 6-1 on Tuesday evening (March 22) at the Ohio Softball Field.
The Buckeyes got off to a quick start in front of the large crowd with an RBI single in the second inning, and added a two-run home run in the third to establish an early 3-0 lead.
Ohio answered back in the fourth inning behind strong pitching from senior starter
Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.), who held Ohio State scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, and fifth year
Tori Walker (Plain City, Ohio) doubled to bring in sophomore
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio).
The Bobcats weren't done as a couple of walks loaded the bases and the Buckeyes had to make a pitching change. Unfortunately, they were not able to convert the opportunity into runs.
"We were a little amped up," head coach
Kenzie Roark said. "We set a record for attendance tonight. Last year we were only allowed to have half the, fans and this year we have 1,000 people in our second home game."
Ohio State added another two runs in the sixth inning and a solo home run in the seventh inning to extend its lead to five runs.
Kohl pitched all seven innings, giving up six runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk. Offensively, the Bobcats were led by Walker, junior
Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) and fifth year
Megan McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio), who each tallied hit. As a team, Ohio forced five walks and struck out five times.
