Ohio Softball Opens MAC Play at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y.  – The Ohio softball team (6-14, 0-2 MAC) opened Mid-American Conference play on Friday at Buffalo (10-8, 2-0 MAC), dropping two games of a doubleheader to the Bulls. The Bobcats fell in game one, 4-3 and then dropped the second contest, 3-2. 
 
GAME ONE: Buffalo 4, Ohio 3
Overall, Ohio scored three runs on seven hits and had two errors, while Buffalo scored four runs on six hits and committed one error. 
 
Senior Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) led Ohio, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) added a homerun, RBI and run scored, while graduate student Megan McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) added a triple. Sophomore Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) registered a hit and a run scored, while fifth year Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) and sophomore Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both had hit for the Bobcats. 
 
The Bobcats opened the game with the first hit of the game in the top of the first with a triple from McMenemy, however, Ohio was unable to score. 
 
After three full scoreless innings from both team, Ohio got on the board first with a solo homerun from Bernard, giving Ohio a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. However, the Bulls went to tie the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI triple. 
 
After a scoreless top of the fifth for the Bobcats, Buffalo took a 2-1 lead on a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
 
The Bobcats responded in the top of the sixth inning. After Paoli led off with a single, she later scored on a single through the left side by Fogue, tying the game at 2-2. The Bobcats took the lead moments later when Logan reached first on a single and an error from the Buffalo shortstop, scoring Fogue, giving Ohio the 3-2 lead. 
 
After the Bobcats got out of the bottom of the frame, the Bobcats were unable to add on in the top of the seventh. Then with a runner on in the bottom of the seventh, Buffalo hit a walk-off two-run homerun, taking game one by the final of 4-3. 
 
In the circle, Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walked one and struck out five. 
 
GAME TWO: Buffalo 3, Ohio 2
 Overall, Ohio scored two runs on seven hits and did not commit an error, while Buffalo scored three runs on seven hits and had one error. 
 
Individually, Fogue went 2-for-3, while senior Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) added a hit and an RBI. Freshman Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) added two hits, one double, one RBI and a run scored, while graduate student Tori Walker (Plain City, Ohio) added a hit and a run scored. 
 
In the second game of the day, Buffalo took the early 1-0 lead after an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. 
 
The Bobcats struck in the top of the third inning. After Walker reached first on a single. She then moved to third after a throwing error from the third baseman. Walker scored moments later when Yuhas doubled down the left field line, tying the game at 1-1. Ohio took the lead on the next at bat, with Spacek reaching on a single to right, scoring Yuhas and putting Ohio up, 2-1 after three innings. 
 
After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings from both teams, Buffalo tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when a runner on third scored on a wild pitch, knotting the game at 2-2. 
 
After a scoreless top of the seventh for Ohio, Buffalo generated some offense in the bottom of the frame. After reaching on a one-out double and then advancing to third on a wild pitch, the UB baserunner scored on a fielder's choice run down, walking off the Bulls' for the second-straight game with the 3-2 win. 
 
In the circle, senior Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out seven.

The Bobcats conclude the three-game series on Saturday, March 19. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Canisius College.
