Ohio Women's Basketball Falls to Columbia on the Road

New York, NY – The Ohio women's basketball team (2-9, 0-0 MAC) traveled to New York after a small holiday break to face off against Columbia University (11-2, 0-0 IVY). The contest marked the first meeting between the respective teams and initiated the start of the all-time series. Ohio ultimately fell 59-81 to the Lions after a hard fought battle. Yaya Felder dominated on the offense once more with 21 points, followed by Kendall Hale with 11. Caitlyn Kroll came out on top in rebounds, snagging 8 total. 

To start the first quarter, Yaya Felder initiated offensive plays, scoring Ohio's first 7 points, followed by a layup from Abby Garnett. The Bobcats increased pressure on Columbia, gaining momentum on offense in the last minute of the quarter. Jasmine Hale had two layups back to back getting Ohio 4 more points on the board. Leading in rebounds at the end of the first quarter was Abby Garnett with 3, followed by Caitlyn Kroll with 2. Ohio totaled 13 points in the first ten minutes, making the score 13-24 going into quarter 2. 

Ohio came out strong in the second quarter, putting the Lions in a scoring drought. The Bobcats held Columbia to only 7 points in the second period, while Ohio grabbed 13. Their defense held strong with Caitlyn Kroll leading in rebounds, followed by Kate Dennis and Abby Garnett. At the end of the second, Yaya Felder collected 8 points adding to her total of 21 and set the precedent for the second half. Going into the locker room the score was at 33-38/

To start the second half, Abby Garnett came out with full intensity on offense with a three point jumper, quickly followed by a driving layup. Kendall Hale also proved to be an asset for the Bobcats driving in the paint and forcing shot fouls. 

The score was 47-55 going into the fourth and final quarter, the contest quickly turned into a 5 point game after a three point jumper from Kendall Hale. Other scoring came from Jasmine Hale and Yaya Felder, but it was Caitlyn Kroll with the three pointers that kept Ohio in the game. Ohio continued to pressure Columbia closing the scoring gap, but the Lions took off with 3 minutes left of play with three point shooters from all angles. The Bobcats managed to get the score with five before Columbia finished 81-59.

The Ohio Bobcats will start MAC conference play on the road and face Akron. The away contest will be on January 4th at 7 pm and will be available to stream on ESPN3/+
