INDIANAPOLIS, IND – The Ohio women's basketball team (0-4, 0-0 MAC) traveled to Indianapolis to play the IUPUI Jaguars (3-2, 0-0 HL) on a Sunday matchup (Nov. 20). Ohio came out behind, falling 86-97 to the Jaguars after a hard fought road battle. Today's matchup marks the sixth contest between the Ohio Bobcats and the IUPUI Jaguars making the all-time series count now tied at 3-3. Overall the Bobcats were led on offense by Yaya Felder, recording 26 points and surpassing her career high that was set last Thursday (11/17) against Ohio State at 21. Felder comments, "it definitely feels good to keep improving and now I'm in a rhythm so I look forward to what's coming the rest of the season."
In the first 10 minutes of play, IUPUI hit 5 of 9 three point attempts to gain the lead quickly with a 68.4 FG% and 55.6 3P%. Ohio responded to the Jags strong offensive start with 5 defensive rebounds, grabbed by Kate Dennis, Caitlyn Kroll, Abby Garnett and Yaya Felder. The final score of the first quarter was 15-31 with the Bobcats shooting 7-17 (41.2%) FG and 1-7 (14.3%) 3P. Ohio was led in scoring by Jaya McClure in the first 10 minutes of play, putting up a layup in the 8th minute and a 3 pointer in the 9th minute, closing out the quarter.
The Ohio Bobcats came out fighting in the second quarter looking for redemption on the Jags and ultimately outscoring them 23-18. However, the 23 points weren't enough to catch back up to the Jags sitting at 49 to end the half. The Bobcats challenged IUPUI on the boards adding 9 more rebounds to their total count of 15 in the first 20 minutes. Ohio also improved their shooting to 50% on both FG's and 3P's and went 5 for 6 on the line. At the buzzer for half, Kate Dennis hit a three from far out to put the Bobcats within 11 points of the Jags.
To start the third quarter, Abby Garnett and Yaya Felder led Ohio with 4 rebounds from Garnett, and 4 points from Felder in the first 2 minutes of the half. Aja Austin also got time on the floor for Ohio and recorded 3 rebounds. Overall, Ohio added 22 more points to the board; 7 FG's, 1 3P, and 7 FT's. The score was 60-77 going into the 4th and final quarter.
The fourth quarter was the highest scoring quarter for the Ohio Bobcats, walking away with 26 more points. In the first 2 minutes of the quarter Ohio's Yaya Felder had a defensive rebound, a driving layup, and a steal, while Kendall Hale was also a huge offensive weapon for Ohio with a 3 pointer and multiple rebounds in the fourth quarter. Ohio held strong, playing till the last second and shortening the Jags lead to 11 points, ending the content 86-97.
