ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio Women's soccer team (9-6-2) took to Chessa Field this Sunday (Oct. 23), defeating the Western Michigan Broncos (4-8-5) on senior night. The final score after 90 intense minutes the Bobcats secured a 3-2 win.
The first 45 minutes of play consisted of multiple shots from the Bobcats; Abby Townsend led with 4, followed by 2 from Haley Miller. Ohio continued to put pressure on the Broncos goalkeeper in the first half scoring in the 13th minute of play and 41st minute of play. Abby Townsend had the first Bobcat goal assisted by Regan Berg and Olivia Darrow had the second goal off a cross from Scout Murray and a pass from Aubrey Rea, putting Ohio in the lead at half, 2-0.
To start the second half, both teams came out strong in pursuit of the MAC win. WMU was the first to score in the second half in the 64th minute of play, but it took less than 4 minutes for Abby Townsend to retaliate, scoring her 2nd goal of the game to give Ohio the 3-1 lead. However in the 80th minute of play WMU had a penalty kick to put the game at 3-2, with only 10 minutes left on the clock. Ohio held strong defensively, keeping the ball out of the Broncos possession and securing the win.
Defensively, goalkeeper Sam Wexell played the first half for the Bobcats making 2 saves and freshman, Celeste Sloma finished out the last 45 minutes in goal totaling 5 saves to ensure the Bobcat win.
Coach Aaron Rodgers comments on the important MAC win, "the thing about Western Michigan is, they're so intense, they put you under a lot of pressure and sit in passing lanes making the game more difficult. So we knew that we had to keep possession of the ball and take advantage of our opportunity's. We also maintained possession well on the midfield and I think that helped us control a lot of the game."
