ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (24-17, 15-13 MAC) split a four-game Mid-American Conference rivalry series against Miami (21-22, 14-15) after dropping both games of a Saturday (May 8) doubleheader at Bob Wren Stadium. The Bobcats fell by an 11-5 score in seven innings in game one, then lost by a 6-1 count in nine innings in game two of the twin bill.
Game One: Miami 11, Ohio 5 (seven innings)
The RedHawks pounded out 11 runs on 12 hits over seven frames, plating crooked numbers in the second (three runs), third (two runs) and fourth (four runs) innings.
The Bobcats tallied only six hits and trailed 11-0 heading into the home half of the sixth, though Ohio did stage a mini-rally with a five run bottom half.
Redshirt junior right fielder Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) and redshirt senior shortstop Joe Weisenseel (Strongsville, Ohio) each tallied a pair of singles while junior catcher Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) doubled for Ohio's only extra-base hit and drove in two runs. Graduate student third baseman Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) also drove in a pair of runs.
Game Two: Miami 6, Ohio 1 (nine innings)
Ohio scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning as Hafner smacked a two-out RBI double to center.
That proved to be the lone run of the contest for the Bobcats, however. Miami took the lead with two runs in the fourth, tacked on another in the sixth and added three more for insurance in the ninth.
The RedHawks limited the Bobcats to only four hits, with Hafner's being the only one that went for extra bases.
Ohio looks to get back on track next weekend when it visits Akron for a four-game MAC set. Game one is scheduled for Friday (May 14), with first pitch set for 3 p.m. ET.
