ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team wrapped up its home schedule on Saturday (May 8), splitting a doubleheader with Buffalo. The Bobcats won game one, 12-5, before falling in game two, 12-8.
GAME ONE: Ohio 12, Buffalo 5
The Bobcats out-hit the Bulls, 13-8. Senior infielder Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) led the Bobcats, going 3-for-4 with a grand slam, five RBI and two runs scored. Senior outfielder Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) added two hits, a triple and two runs scored, while junior infielder Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) recorded two hits and a run scored. Senior catcher Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) added a double and three RBI, while graduate student infielder Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw, Ga.) added two RBI.
Ohio struck in the bottom of the first inning. After Englant tripled on the first pitch of the inning, she scored a pitch later on an RBI single from Yun. Then with the bases loaded and Ohio already leading 3-0, Rice doubled to left center, clearing the bases and putting Ohio up 6-0 after one.
Buffalo got two runs back in the top of the second on a two-RBI double from senior Anna Aguon, cutting the Bobcats' lead to 6-2.
The Bobcats added on in the bottom of the third inning on a grand slam by Yun, giving Ohio a 10-2 lead after three frames.
Buffalo extended the game in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to cut the Ohio lead to 10-4 going to the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bulls added another run on the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double from freshman Rachel Steffan, cutting the Bobcats' lead to 10-5.
The Bobcats added on to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Vaughn and junior outfielder Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.), giving the Bobcats a 12-5 lead going into the final frame.
In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats' defense sent the Bulls down in order, sealing the 12-5 win for the Bobcats.
In the circle for Ohio, Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched seven innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out seven. For Buffalo, graduate student Ally Marcano got the start, pitching two-thirds of an inning, allowing six runs on four hits, while walking three. Freshman Julia Tarantino pitched five and a third innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out three.
GAME TWO: Buffalo 12, Ohio 8
The Bobcats and Buffalo both registered 12 hits. Fogue led Ohio in game two, going 3-for-3 with a homerun, three RBI and two runs scored. Englant added two hits and a run scored, while freshman infielder Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) recorded two hits and a run scored.
Buffalo struck first in the top of the first inning, taking the lead on a two-run homerun from junior Alexis Matheney, giving the Bulls an early 2-0 lead. The Bulls added two more in the top of the second on an RBI single from Aguon, putting Buffalo up, 4-0.
Ohio got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs on four hits and was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Fogue to cut the Buffalo lead to 4-3 after two innings. However, Buffalo got the runs back in the top of the third, scoring four runs on four hits as Matheney hit her second homerun of the game to help put the Bulls up 8-3.
The Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homerun from Fogue, cutting the UB lead to 8-4. However, UB added two more in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 10-4 lead.
After scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bobcats cut further into the UB lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs two hit to cut the Buffalo lead to 10-8 going into the seventh inning. Unfortunately, Buffalo got two runs back in the top of the frame on a two-run homerun from junior Olivia Kincanon, putting UB back up, 12-8.
The Bobcats threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, however Ohio was unable to capitalize, falling to the Bulls, 12-8.
In the circle, senior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio), sophomore Holly Brehm (Mullens, W. Va.) and freshman Cassidy Zacker (Lancaster, Ohio) combined to allow 12 runs on 12 hits, walked five and struck out three.

The Bobcats are back on the road on Wednesday, April 12 when they head to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
