ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (29-15) was back in action Wednesday night (April 15), defeating Sun Belt-leading Marshall (32-11), 4-2, at the Ohio Softball Field.

Overall, Ohio scored four runs on seven hits and committed one error, while Marshall scored two runs on four hits and committed one error. Both teams stranded six runners on base.

At the plate, senior Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) added a hit, a home run, a run scored and three RBI. Senior Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a hit, while senior Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) drew a walk and scored a run. Junior Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) added a hit and a run scored, while graduate student Rylee McDaniel (Ventura, Calif.) had a double and junior Kylie Gorsuch (North Canton, Ohio) added a base hit.

In the circle, graduate student Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start and picked up her 16th win of the season, throwing seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walked four and struck out one.

Ohio threatened in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases with one out after singles from Hummel, Farmer and Westler. However, the Marshall defense got out of the jam, sending the game of the second inning still scoreless.

After Marshall left the bases loaded in the top of the third, Ohio took the lead in the bottom of the inning. After Bare scored when Westler reached on a single to give Ohio a 1-0 lead, Wilson hit a three-run home run to right field, giving Ohio a 4-0 lead entering the fourth inning.

Marshall looked to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning after the leadoff batter walked and stole second. However, moments later, a diving play from McDaniel threw the runner out at second who was off the bag. Then after a caught stealing, Miller was able to produce a fly out to end the inning and send the game to the bottom of the inning with Ohio still leading, 4-0.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Marshall cut the Ohio lead in half in the top of the sixth with back-to-back home runs, cutting the Bobcats lead to 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.

After Ohio went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, Marshall looked to rally in the top of the seventh. With one out, the Herd put runners on first and second. After a runner advanced to third on a ground out, the final batter of the game drove the ball to shallow center, where Hummel was able to complete the diving catch, securing the 4-2 win for the Bobcats.

Up next, the Bobcats head to Kent, Ohio April 17-18 for a three-game series with Kent State. The Bobcats and Flashes will now play two games on Friday starting at 1 p.m. ET, before wrapping up the series with a single game on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. ET.
