KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Ohio baseball team (28-24, 19-20 MAC) dropped both seven-inning games of a Saturday (May 29) doubleheader to host Western Michigan (23-26, 22-17 MAC) by scores of 4-3 and 4-2 at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.
Game One: Western Michigan 4, Ohio 3 (seven innings)
Ohio made it a one-run game after battling back from a 4-1 deficit by plating a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth but couldn't quite complete the comeback bid.
Senior center fielder Sebastian Fabik (Lebanon, Ohio) led Ohio's bats with a 3-for-3 effort that included a double, a walk and two runs scored. Redshirt junior designated hitter Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) went 2-for-4.
Senior right-handed starting pitcher Edward Kutt IV (Tustin, Calif.) went six innings on the mound, striking out six while allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits and a walk.
Game Two: Western Michigan 4, Ohio 2 (seven innings)
Three of Ohio's four hits went for extra bases as graduate student first baseman Harry Witwer-Dukes (Monmouth, Ore.), graduate student third baseman Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) and senior second baseman Treyben Funderburg (Beavercreek, Ohio) each collected doubles.
Ohio will look to finish the 2021 season on a high note when it takes on Western Michigan in the regular season finale on Sunday (May 30). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET.
