AKRON, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (25-20, 16-16 MAC) rallied from a 8-4 deficit to tie the game but ultimately fell to Akron (14-32, 8-28 MAC), 9-8, in the finale of a four-game Mid-American Conference series on Sunday (May 16).
The Zips broke a four-all tie by plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 8-4 lead, but the Bobcats responded by scoring four more runs of their own over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. A two-out single by graduate student first baseman Harry Witwer-Dukes (Monmouth, Ore.) in the top of the eighth drove in redshirt junior second baseman Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.), who had reached on an Akron error, and tied the game back up.
Ohio's comeback began in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by senior center fielder Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.). The seventh inning saw Ohio plate two more runs on one swing of the bat by senior designated hitter Aaron Levy (Cincinnati, Ohio) to make it a one-run affair. Graduate student third baseman Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) set the table for Levy's two-run home run to right by coming through with a two-out single.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Akron received a two-out RBI double in the home half of the eighth to retake the lead. The Zips then forced the Bobcats to strand two runners on base in the ninth.
Ohio was led at the plate by Levy, who finished with a pair of home runs. In addition to his two-run round tripper in the seventh, he smacked leadoff solo shot in the fourth. Redshirt junior right fielder Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) collected a team-high three hits, including a double. Peterson finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Ohio will look to bounce back next weekend as it welcomes Ball State to Bob Wren Stadium for its final home series of the 2021 season.
