MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Ohio softball team (21-26,17-21 MAC) concluded the 2021 season on Sunday (May 16), falling to Central Michigan (20-28, 18-20 MAC), 8-7, in eight innings.
Central Michigan outhit Ohio, 13-9. In the final game of her career, graduate student infielder Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw, Ga.) recorded two hits, a homerun, a double, four RBI and one run scored. Also in their final game, senior infielder Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) had two hits, a double and two runs scored, while senior outfielder Ava Heidorn (Marysville, Ohio) had one hit. Junior infielder Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) added three hits, two doubles, three RBI and one run scored. Senior outfielder Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) added a double and one run scored.
The Bobcats struck first in the top of the first inning, when with two outs, Vaughn doubled with the bases loaded to give Ohio the early 3-0 lead. However, CMU got a run back in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a two-out RBI single to cut the Bobcats' lead to 3-1 after one inning.
Ohio added on in the top of the second inning, when once again the Bobcats loaded the bases, this time with one out. Spacek then doubled down the left field line, clearing the based and giving Ohio a 6-1 lead. CMU cut the Bobcats' lead in half in the bottom of the frame, scoring two run to make the score 603 after two innings.
Central Michigan went on to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits to knot the game at 6-6 after three innings.
Ohio retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Vaughn hit a leadoff homerun to left center, giving the Bobcats the 7-6 lead.
Central Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, when with two outs, senior Tala Dean hit a homerun to left, knotted the game at 7-7 and sending the game to extra innings.
Ohio threatened in the top of the eighth inning, however, were unable to capitalize. Unfortunately, CMU was able to capitalize on a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning, walking off with the 8-7 victory.
In the circle, senior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) pitched two innings, allowing five runs on six hits, walked four and struck out two. Junior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three. For CMU, the duo of senior Cloe Mallory and freshman Grace Lehto pitched eight innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out five.
The game concluded the 2021 season for Ohio softball.
