MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Ohio softball team (21-25, 17-20 MAC) returned to action on Saturday (May 15), dropping a doubleheader to Central Michigan (19-28, 17-20 MAC). Ohio fell in game one, 6-4, and dropped game two, 6-3.
GAME ONE: CMU 6, Ohio 4
Central Michigan out-hit Ohio. 7-5, while the Bobcats did not commit an error to CMU's two. Individually, junior infielder Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) recorded two hits and scored one run, while sophomore pinch hitter Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) recorded a double and an RBI. Senior infielder Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) recorded one hit, a homerun, one run scored and two RBI, while senior catcher Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) added a hit for the Bobcats.
Central Michigan struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits to take an early 2-0 lead. CMU added on in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs on three hits and was capped by a three-run homerun from senior Morgan Gardener, putting Central Michigan up 6-0 after two innings.
Ohio got on the board in the top of the third inning. With two on and one out, Yun flied out, however, that allowed freshman pinch runner Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) and Walker score on an error from the right fielder, cutting the CMU lead to 6-2.
The Bobcats cut the CMU lead in half in the top of the sixth inning when Yun hit a leadoff homerun to cut the Central Michigan lead to 6-3.
The Bobcats attempted to mount a rally in the top of the seventh inning. Spacek singled to lead the inning off and then scored on an RBI double from Dawe, cutting the CMU lead to 6-4. However, the Bobcats were unable to add on, falling by that final.
In the circle, freshman Cassidy Zaker (Lancaster Ohio) got the start, pitching one and one-third of an inning, allowing four runs on four hits, walked one and struck out two. Senior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four. For CMU, freshman Grace Lehto pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walked two and struck out four.
GAME TWO: CMU 6, Ohio 3
The Bobcats and CMU both recorded nine hits and two errors over the course of the game. Senior outfielder Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded two hits, a double, RBI and a run scored. freshman outfielder Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) recorded two hits, followed by sophomore designated player Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) with two hits and an RBI. Spacek registered a hit, RBI and a run scored, while freshman infielder Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) and graduate student infielder Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw, Ga.) both had a hit.
The Bobcats struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring runs on RBI singles from Spacek and Bernard, giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead after one full frame.
The Bobcats added a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from Englant that game Ohio the 3-0 lead.
Central Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits and capitalizing on one Ohio error to tie the game at 3-3 after four innings of play.
CMU took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a three-run homerun from sophomore Caitlyn Britton, putting Central Michigan up, 6-3.
The Bobcats were unable to get much offsense going over the remaining two innings, falling, 6-3.
In the circle, junior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) got the start, pitching four and one third of an inning, allowing six runs on eight hits. McCrady entered the game and pitched one and two-thirds innings and did not allow a run on one hit. For CMU, the combination of junior Kaitlyn Bean and Britton pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, while walking two and striking out four.
