TOLEDO, Ohio – Led by a total of eight homeruns on the day, the Ohio softball team (12-11, 8-6 MAC) split a doubleheader with Mid-American Conference foe Toledo (17-11, 7-5 MAC) on Friday afternoon (April 9). The Bobcats dropped game one, 10-8, before rallying in game two to score eight unanswered runs to win 10-7.
GAME ONE: Toledo 10, Ohio 8
The Bobcats out-hit the Rockets, 13-11 in the first game of the day, while also hitting six homeruns compared to UT's one. However, the Rocket's registered five doubles to the Bobcats zero.
Individually, senior short stop Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) and graduate student second baseman Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw, Ga.) hit two homeruns and registered three RBI. Junior outfielder Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) also hit two homeruns and added two RBI for the Bobcats.
Toledo got on the board first, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to take an early 3-0 lead. The Bobcats responded in the top of the third, when Yun hit a two-run homerun to cut the Rockets' lead to one.
However, Toledo added on in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs on four hits to take an 8-2 lead into the fourth inning. The Bobcats were able to get a run back in the top of the fourth after Fogue homered to cut the Rockets' lead to 8-3.
Ohio was able to cut into the Toledo lead once again in the top of the sixth inning when Vaughn hit a one-out homerun to left center. Two batters later, Fogue crushed her second homerun of the game to cut the UT lead to 8-5 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. However, the Rockets were able to get the runs back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs to take a 10-5 lead into the final frame.
The Bobcats attempted to mount a rally in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Yun hit her second homerun of the day, a solo shot, to cut the lead to 10-6. Freshman third baseman Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) reached first on a single, setting up Vaughn's second homerun of the day, cutting the Toledo lead to 10-8. Sophomore designated player Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) would go on to reach first, however, the Bobcats were unable to complete the rally, falling, 10-8 in the first game of the day.
In the circle, junior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) got the start, pitching two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, while sophomore Holly Brehm (Mullens, W. Va.) pitched three and a thirds innings, allowing four runs on four hits.
GAME TWO: Ohio 10, Toledo 7
Ohio out-hit the Rockets, 19-13 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Freshman outfielder Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) led the Bobcats with three hits, one homerun, three RBI and three runs scored. Yun added three more hits, a double and RBI, while Paoli also added three hits with an RBI and a run scored. Vaughn added to her homerun total with a homerun, RBI and two runs scored, while Dawe recorded three hits, RBI and two runs scored.
Toledo got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on five hits to take a 3-0 lead after one inning. Ohio got on the board in the top of the second inning when Vaughn hit her third homerun of the day, cutting the Toledo lead to 3-1.
However, Toledo added on in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on two hits, extending their lead to 6-1.
The Bobcats got a run back in the top of the fourth inning an RBI double from senior catcher Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) to bring the Bobcats within four. However, the Rockets got the run back in the bottom of the frame, taking a 7-2 lead.
The Bobcats' didn't quit, mounting a rally in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five run on seven hits that was capped by a two-RBI single from freshman pinch hitter Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and an RBI double from Yun, tying the game at 7-7.
Ohio took its first lead of the day in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run homerun from Walker, putting Ohio up 9-7 going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Bobcats added one more run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single from Paoli to take a 10-7 lead. Toledo attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, however, the Bobcats turned a game-ending double play to seal the win.
In the circle, senior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) got the start, pitching all seven innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits, walked two and struck out seven.

The Bobcats and Toledo will conclude the four game series with a doubleheader tomorrow (April 10) that will start at noon.
