MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ohio softball team (17-18, 13-13 MAC) wrapped up a four-game series with Ball State (25-12, 19-2 MAC) on Sunday (April 25) afternoon, falling 11-7.
Ball State out-hit the Bobcats, 14-10 and capitalized on Ohio's two errors, while the Cardinals did not commit a miscue. Leading Ohio at the plate was graduate student infielder Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw, Ga.) who added three hits, a double, homerun, two RBI and three runs scored. Senior outfielder Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) added three hits with a run scored. Senior infielder Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) had one hit, a homerun and two RBI, while junior infielder Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) added a homerun.
The Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Bobcats responded in the top of the second inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI single from junior outfielder Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.).
The Bobcats' offense game alive in the top of the third inning. After Englant doubled to lead off the inning, Yun hit a homerun to center, giving Ohio a 3-1 lead. The Bobcat's weren't done. Sophomore catcher Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) followed up with a double of her own, before an RBI single from Vaughn increased the Ohio lead to 4-1. Spacek then topped off the inning with a two-run homerun of her own, giving the Bobcats a 6-1 lead going to the bottom of the third.
Ball State took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs on five hits and two errors to go up 8-6. Ball State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-6 lead.
Ohio got a run back in the top of the fifth on a homerun from Vaughn, however, Ball State responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh to seal the 11-7 win.
In the circle, senior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) got the start, pitching two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on three hits. Junior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched a third of an inning, allowing four runs, while freshman Cassidy Zaker (Lancaster, Ohio) entered the game and pitched three innings, allowing one run on five hits.
For Ball State, the duo of Darcie Huber and Tieghan Morio pitched seven innings, alloing seven runs on 10 hits, walked three and struck out eight.
Ohio is back in action on Wednesday, April 28 when the Bobcats head to Akron, Ohio for a doubleheader with the Zips set for 1 p.m.
