WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Ohio softball team (2-5) returned to action on Saturday (March 13), sweeping UNC Wilmington in a doubleheader. Ohio took game one by the final of 6-4, while securing game two with the 7-2 final.
GAME ONE: Ohio 6, UNCW 4
The Bobcats out-hit UNCW, 11-9 and were led by sophomore designated player Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) who went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior infielder Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) added two hits and two runs scored, while freshman infielder Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) also added two base hits. Senior shortstop Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) registered a double, while Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) recorded her first career hit and RBI in the win.
UNCW struck first in the top of the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Ohio responded in the top of the third, taking a 3-1 lead that was capped by a two-RBI double from Dawe, putting the Bobcats up 3-2. However, the Seahawks tied the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on two hits and capitalizing on a Bobcats' error. The Bobcats responded immediately and capitalized on aggressive base running and UNCW errors to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.
UNCW was able to cut the Ohio lead to one, however, the Bobcats responded, scoring its sixth run of the game in the top of the sixth inning to take the 6-4 lead into the bottom of the frame.
The Bobcat defense and pitching hunkered down over the final two defensive frames, sealing the 6-4 victories for the Bobcats.
In the circle, junior pitcher Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) picked up her first win of the season, pitching seven innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking out two.
For UNCW, starting pitcher graduate student Rylee Pete went all seven innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on 11 hits, walked one and struck out six Bobcats.
GAME TWO: Ohio 7, UNCW 2
The Bobcats again out-hit UNCW, 13-7. Ohio was led by senior outfielder Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) who went 3-of-4 with a run scored. Yun added three hits and two RBI, while Paoli recorded two hits, one double, RBI and one run scored. Dawe continued her strong day by added two more hits, including a double, while scoring two runs. Spacek also added two RBI for Ohio.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs on three hits, including an RBI single by Yun.
After UNCW cut the Ohio lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning, the Bobcats offense exploded in the top of the third inning. The Bobcats scored four run on five hits and the inning was capped by an RBI single from Yun and an RBI double from Spacek to put the Bobcats up, 6-1 after three innings.
The Bobcats added a seventh run in the top of the fourth inning, while UNCW scored their second run of the game off a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Ohio lead to 7-2. However, once again, the Bobcats defense held steady, helping secure the 7-2 victory.
In the circle, starting pitcher senior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while walking four and striking out four.
For UNCW, junior pitcher Janel Gamache got the start, pitching three innings while allowing six runs on nine hits. Sophomore pitcher Amberlyn Pearce threw four innings, allowing one run on four hits.

Ohio is back in action on Sunday (March 14) for another doubleheader against UNCW. First pitch for game one is set for 12 p.m. ET.
