ATHENS, Ohio -- Bobcats point guard
Cece Hooks has been selected to 2022 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Preseason Watch List, Her Hoop Stats announced today (Oct. 20). It's the second year in a row that Hooks has been named by Her Hoop Stats to the preseason watch list.
The senior from Dayton, Ohio earned MAC Player of the Year, MAC Defensive Player of the Year, All-MAC First Team, All-MAC Defensive Team, and an All-American Honorable Mention recognition last season.
in the 2020-21 campaign, Hooks averaged a MAC-best 25.1 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds and 4 assists in 34.4 minutes per game. She also recorded 94 steals during the season, good for 3.4 per game. She became the second player in program history to eclipse 2,000 career points, and scored over 30 points five different times and logged the second-ever triple double in program history with a statline of 31 points, 11 assists, and 10 steals in a game against Miami.
Hooks is joined on the preseason watch list by fellow MAC players Lexi Fleming (Bowling Green), and Dyaisha Fair (Buffalo).
To be eligible for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." In January, 15 players will be named to the midseason watch list, with 10 semifinalists being announced in February and the five finalists announced in early March. The winner of the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award will be announced in late March.
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program's only appearance to date. She was signed by the New York Liberty in 1999 and traded to the San Antonio Stars in 2007, where she played the rest of her career.
Hammon retired in 2014 as a six-time All-Star and a two-time All-WNBA First-Team honoree. She then became just the second female coach in NBA history when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Additionally, Hammon is the only woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer League as well as the only woman to be a member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff.
The Becky Hammon Award was first established in 2020, with South Dakota's Ciara Duffy winning the inaugural award.
