ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio (5-3, 3-2 MAC) women's basketball team took down Toledo (6-2, 2-3 MAC), 85-66, on Saturday afternoon at The Convocation Center.
"Toledo has two fantastic guards and I thought we did a great job of making it difficult on them," head coach Bob Boldon said. "Toledo traditionally runs their plays very well we did a good of disrupting the rhythm of what they were trying to do."
Ohio was stellar on defense, forcing Toledo to shoot 20-of-57 (35.1 percent) from the field and 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from the three-point line. In the first half, UT shot just 6-of-30 (20.0 percent) and 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from deep. The Bobcats were 32-of-76 (42.1 precent) from the field and 13-of-36 (36.1 percent) from the three-point line.
Ohio was led by senior guard Cece Hooks (Dayton, Ohio), who posted 24 points on 9-of-27 shooting. Hooks knocked down two from deep and was 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Hooks filled up the stat sheet, posting a season-high six steals, five rebounds, a season-high four blocks and three assists.
"This week, she has been fantastic," Boldon added. "It started when she showed up at Miami with a little bit of an edge and disrupted what they were trying to do, and then today she was everywhere. She blocked shots, got loose balls, and was tipping balls. She was everywhere."
Redshirt junior guard Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio) had 14 points after going 5-of-8 from the field and 4-of-6 from the three-point line. Kroll's 14 is her high while playing at Ohio. Kroll added one board and one helper.
"It was wonderful to see what Caitlyn (Kroll) did today," Boldon said. "She works her tail off and every day after practice she does a shooting regimen. You just love it as a coach when you watch kids put in the work when no one else is there, to see that work pay off."
Redshirt junior guard Erica Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) was two assists short of a triple-double after posting 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Johnson now has two double-doubles this season and 15 in her career.
"I don't think Erica's value is in just scoring," Boldon said. "Erica has value in the fact she can score, distribute and rebound. She has a great understanding of the game. She's going to have however many assists and she's also going to have some passes that lead to somebody else getting an assist. To me, that's what makes Erica Johnson one of the best players in the league."
Senior forward Gabby Burris (Baltimore, Ohio) had her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Burris was 4-of-10 from the floor and made two free throws while adding a season-high four steals.
Redshirt freshman guard Madi Mace (Parkersburg, W. Va.) had eight points and eight rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Kaylee Bambule (Plainfield, Ill.) knocked down two threes for six points, while sophomore guard Peyton Guice (Westerville, Ohio) added six points of her own.
Redshirt sophomore guard Jasmine Hale (Cincinnati, Ohio) added five points and hit one three, while redshirt sophomore forward Abby Garnett (Golden, Colo.) had one point.
The Bobcats forced 20 UT turnovers and had 16 steals. Hooks' six steals led the way, while Burris had four. Johnson, Kroll, Mace, Hale, Garnett and senior guard Hunter Rogan (Urbana, Ohio) all had one. OU scored 20 points off of turnovers.
OU outrebounded Toledo, 46-40. Both Johnson and Burris had 10 boards, while Mace had eight. 15 of Ohio's 46 rebounds were on the offensive glass.
Ohio's biggest lead of the night came at the 4:07 mark when OU pushed to a 28 point lead. Toledo did not lead the entire game.
Ohio will continue MAC play at home on Wednesday. Tip-off against Ball State is set for 6 p.m.
