GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Ohio women's swimming and diving team defeated Denison University Friday evening in their first dual meet of 2015, bringing home the 175-123 victory.
The meet began with a victory for Ohio in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio), Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.), Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Eng.), and Haley Clark (College Station, Texas) won the race, finishing with a time of 3:47.52. The Bobcats also took third-place, with the quartet of Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.), Hannah Shinn (Waterloo, Ill.), Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.), and Katie Lemen (Carmel, Ind.) finishing the race with a time of 3:57.28.
Josie Barker (Richmond, N. Yorkshire, Eng.) followed suit for the Bobcats, taking first-place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.83. Myriah Ariza-Balter (Evergreen, Colo.) also competed in the 200-yard freestyle, taking silver with a time of 1:56.16.
The meet continued with the 100-yard backstroke, where Ohio continued to dominate. Ferguson won the event, with a time of 57.03. She was then followed by Raley, who finished second in the event with a time of 58.96.
Bagan and Shinn followed with another one-two finish in the following event, the 100-yard breaststroke. Bagan took first with a time of 1:03.02, and Shinn followed for the silver with a time of 1:07.05.
The sixth event of the evening was the 200-yard butterfly, where Dawson and Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.) finished the race in first and second, respectively. Dawson completed the race with a time of 2:03.36, and Patz with a time of 2:05.69. Clark then followed her teammates in the 50-yard freestyle, taking third-place in the event with a time of 24.37.
The meet then turned to diving, with Karrisa Conner winning the 1-meter diving competition with a final score of 227.40. She also took the gold in the 3-meter event, with a score of 229.80.
Dawson and Clark returned to the pool for the 100-yard freestyle event, taking first and third-place in the event. Dawson finished the race first with a time of 51.95, and Clark with a time 53.41, which earned her third-place.
The evening continued with the 200-yard backstroke event, in which the Bobcats took the swept the podium. Ferguson won the event with a time of 2:05.65, and was then followed by Ariza-Balter, who finished second with a time of 2:08.62. In third was Raley, who finished with a time of 2:09.66.
Bagan and Shinn continued to dominate in the breaststroke events, taking first and third-place in the 200-yard event. Bagan finished first, completing the race with a time of 2:22.52, and Shinn finished third with a time of 2:25.48.
Barker returned in the 500-yard freestyle, earning third-place in the event with a time of 5:09.86. The following event was the 100-yard butterfly, in which Ferguson, Dukes, and Patz took one-two-three, respectively. Ferguson finished first with a time of 56.55, Dukes followed for second-place with a time of 57.49, and Patz took third with a time of 58.26.
The competition continued for Ohio with the 200-yard individual medley event, in which Dawson took the gold with a time of 2:07.58. Stephanie Gyurke (Bellevue, Ohio) earned third-place, finishing the event with a time of 2:11.92.
The final race of the evening was the 200-yard freestyle relay, in which the Bobcats took second-place. The relay of Barker, Bagan, Clark, and Lemen completed the evening Ohio with a final time of 1:37.75.
The Bobcats will take to the road next when they travel to Toledo, Ohio, to compete with the Rockets on January 24. The competition will begin at 1:00 p.m.
