Ohio Baseball Drops Series Opener to Akron

AKRON, Ohio - The Ohio University baseball team (5-25) was defeated 8-0 Friday afternoon by the University of Akron (17-14) at Lee R. Jackson Field.

Junior Taylor Emody (Milan, Ohio) tied a season-high with two hits to lead the way offensively. Junior Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) also chipped in offensively as he extended his hitting streak to a season-best 11 games. Madsen also made his 135th-consecutive start.

Freshman Jake Roehn (Sandwich, Ill.) got the start, but suffered the loss after he went 6.0 innings and allowed three earned runs.

Akron starter John Valek went the distance and earned the win. He walked just one batter, struck out a pair and scattered six hits.

The Zips jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the second. Ohio threatened in the top half of the fifth inning as it put a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs, but was unable to come away with any runs.

Akron added another run in the bottom half of the fifth to extend its lead to 2-0.

Following a pair of scoreless innings by Ohio in the sixth and seventh, the Zips broke the game wide open in the bottom half of the seventh as they scored six runs on four hits to open up an 8-0 lead.

The Zips secured the win by holding Ohio to just two hits in the final two innings.

Ohio and Akron return to action on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The game will aired live on WOUB 1340am.
