MAC Championships Day Two

NASHPORT, Ohio â€" The Ohio University women’s golf team showed improvement across the board on the second day of competition at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday. Ohio dropped 16 strokes from its first round to shoot a score of 327 on Saturday. Through two rounds of play, the Bobcats remain in ninth place.
Four Bobcat golfersâ€"Julie Lechner (Powell, Ohio), Kristen Helmsdoerfer (Westerville, Ohio), Sarah Tranelli (Penfield, N.Y.), and Lauren McKinzie (Medina, Ohio)â€"showed improvement on Saturday. McKinzie, a freshman, showed the largest change, dropping seven strokes from Friday to Saturday. Junior Kara Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) held steady with a score of 79 for the second straight day.
A number of Ohio golfers got off to great starts on Saturday. Through three holes, Brinkmann was tied for the lead, shooting a one-under par score of 11. Tranelli hit her stride in holes 3-6, hitting a birdie on the fifth hole and following it up with an eagle on the par-four sixth.
Kent State retains the overall lead following the second day, as the Golden Flashes shot a 298 on Saturday to earn a two-round score of 601. Ball State is in second, having shot 308-304 to accumulate 612 strokes through 36 holes.
Brinkmann led Ohio for the second straight day on Saturday, shooting a +7 score of 79. She is currently tied for 15th in the field of 45 golfers. McKinzie was not far behind her on the second day, shooting a +9 score of 81. She is now tied for 40th along with Helmsdoerfer, who shot an 84 on Saturday.
Tranelli ended the day in 39th place following her second-round score of 83. Lechner rounded things out for the Bobcats, ending the day in 45th place with her two-round score of 175 (90-85).
In an attempt to avoid inclement weather in the area, Sunday’s tee times have been pushed forward to 7 a.m.
