MAC Championships Day One

NASHPORT, Ohio â€" The Ohio University women’s golf team completed the first day of play at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships on Friday. Following one round of play, the Bobcats are in ninth place with a team score of 343 strokes.
After a frost delay of just less 1.5 hours, MAC golfers first took to the tees at 9:15 a.m.
Reigning 14-time MAC champion Kent State led the way on the first day, shooting a team score of 303 to end the afternoon with a five-stroke lead over Ball State (308). Toledo finished Friday’s action in third, having shot a one-round score of 312. Ball State’s Jenna Hague shot the lowest round of the day, hitting an even-par 72 to hold top honors.
Longaberger Golf Club proved to provide a challenging atmosphere for the first day of competition, as the field of 45 golfers shot an average score of 81.11 strokes and combined for 92 double bogeys or worse.
Kara Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) led the way for the Bobcats on the first day, shooting a score of 79. She ended the day tied for 14th place in the field of 45 golfers.
Kristen Helmsdoerfer (Westerville, Ohio) and Sarah Tranelli (Penfield, N.Y.) finished next for Ohio, tying for 39th with matching scores of 87 strokes. Julie Lechner (Powell, Ohio) and Lauren McKinzie (Medina, Ohio) were not far behind, each tying for 43rd by shooting scores of 90 strokes.
The second day of play at the Championships is scheduled to begin at 7:50 a.m. on Saturday. Golfers from Ohio, Bowling Green, and Northern Illinois are set to occupy the first five tee times. Western Michigan, Akron, and Eastern Michigan will then take tee times from 8:40-9:20 while Toledo, Ball State, and Kent State will be the final teams to take the course beginning at a 9:30 a.m.
