COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Swimming and Diving picked up its first loss of the 2011-12 season on Saturday, dropping a dual meet at Ohio State by a final score of 203-97. Ohio State won 14 of the day's 16 events, improving to 5-0 while the Bobcats had their winning streak ended and now sit at 3-1 (3-0 Mid-American Conference).
A number of Ohio student-athletes put together very strong results on Saturday, as four scores cracked the program's all-time top ten marks. Tori Bagan (Roanoke, Ind.) swam a 1:03.83 in the 100 Breaststroke (fourth all-time); Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) scored 278.55 from the one-meter diving board (fourth all-time) and the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay teams also made their imprint on the record books, recording the tenth and ninth best times in program history, respectively.
"Overall I was very happy with the results," said Head Coach Greg Werner. "Of course you'd love to come away with a win or score a few more points, but you have to tip your cap to Ohio State. The Buckeyes are well-deserving of their No. 13 ranking. It was very apparent from the first event that we are performing well and we continued that theme all day long, achieving a number of season bests."
Ohio State jumped out to an early lead, claiming first place in the opening three events of the competition. In the 200 Medley Relay, an Ohio team of Rachel Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.), Bagan, Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Abby Corcoran picked up the second spot, swimming an impressive 1:44.80.
The Bobcats answered back in the next two events, claiming first place in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Breaststroke. Stearns picked up first place in the former, swimming a 57.53 while Bagan immediately followed this up with her 1:03.83 in the 100 Breaststroke.
Ohio State took control of the meet from this point, earning the top spot in each of the remaining 11 events. The Bobcats fought hard for first place in each of these events, earning two of the top three times in the 50 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke and 100 Butterfly.
The Bobcats will next be in action on Dec. 2-4 at the 2011 Zippy Invitational. Ohio will be looking to win this competition for the sixth-straight year.
