BATAVIA, Ohio - Ohio women's golf teed off its fall season with a solid start, firing a 321 and tying for seventh place after the first round of the University of Cincinnati-hosted UC Fall Classic at Elks Run Golf Course.
With consistent play from each of its participants, the Bobcats finished the round just one stroke out of sixth and eight shots off of fifth place with their plus-33 321 on the 6,136-yard, par-72 course. Fellow Mid-American Conference member Toledo leads the 16-team field with a plus-16 304 with Penn State one stroke back at 305. Florida International is third at 307, followed by one squad of the host Bearcats in fourth at 308 and Memphis in fifth at 313. Texas-Pan American is one shot up on Ohio in sixth with a 320, while Southern Mississippi is tied with the Green and White in seventh at 321.
Senior Jordan Fesh (Toledo, Ohio) led the way in a tightly-bunched group of `Cats with a six-over 78, which tied her for 19th overall and was just two strokes out of sixth in a close group of competitors. Sophomore Sarah Tranelli (Penfield, N.Y.) was close behind with an 80, tying her for 36th overall. Junior Megan Weaver (Canton, Ohio) came in with an 81, while sister Meryl Weaver (Canton, Ohio) and freshman Kara Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) each finished with 82's. Kristen Helmsdoerfer (Westerville, Ohio) competed individually and shot an opening-round 91.
The individual leaderboard saw a congested pack of golfers battling for positions. Toledo's Emily Hardcastle, Marshall's Allison Harper and FIU's Cristina Marin are all tied for the top spot at 73 (one over par).
Golfers will finish up the second round, which got under way later than expected Monday, and play the third round Tuesday. Play is scheduled to get under way in the morning with shot-gun start.
