ATHENS, Ohio - Three different Bobcats got in the scoring column as Ohio Field Hockey won their third in a row this afternoon, 3-1 at Richmond. The Green & White improved to 4-5 after goals from Laura Mastro, Taylor Brown and Brittany Zorn.
"To put three goals past a team like Richmond was great," Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "It was exciting the way we scored them also. It was all-around good execution and we attacked well throughout the game."
Mastro's first goal as a Bobcat put her team on the board in the first half. With a minute and a half remaining in the first period, Paige Herr hit the ball in toward goal and a deflection by Brooke Edwards found Mastro at the left post. The sophomore's goal gave Ohio a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
It was an evenly played first half with Richmond holding the edge in shots, 8-7, and penalty corners, 5-3. Goalkeeper Courtney Seiders made five saves and Ohio defenders made two to keep the Spiders off the board.
The 'Cats extended the lead to two goals with just a little over a minute gone in the second period. Brown scored her team-leading seventh goal as Edwards crossed a pass from the endline and was credited with her second assist of the game.
In the 50th minute, Dani Pycroft got Richmond back in the game with her third goal of the season. She and teammate Chelsea Davies each had five shots for the Spiders. It would be the only goal allowed by Seiders who made six saves in the second half for a season-high 11. Ohio also got a season-high four defensive saves, two in each period.
"Courtney made a couple outstanding saves off corners and her play at the back won us the game today," Macmillan added.
The game remained close until the 65th minute when the 'Cats got some insurance. Off a broken corner, Edwards collected a rebound and crossed it to Zorn. It was Edwards' third assist of the afternoon and gave her a team-leading four for the season. The junior had five points this weekend after scoring a goal against RMU on Friday. Zorn's tally was the first of the season for the senior.
Despite winning 3-1, Out was out-shot 19-11, 11-4 in the second half, and was behind in penalty corners, 9-5.
"I was happier with our organization in the second half, despite giving up that many shots," Macmillan said. "We had stifling defense in the first half, but I really thought we played better defensively as a team in the second half. We just allowed more shots."
