ATHENS,Ohio - The Ohio University men's golf team began fall play on Monday at the 41st annual Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
The Bobcats were paced by Byron Firestone back-to-back 71's and the sophomore finished only two shots ahead of junior Paul Grauer through the first two rounds of play. Bradley Lucas, John Mlynarski and Chuck Nettles were the other three Bobcats to take part in the event. Ryan Denney played unattached and tied Firestone for the best round by a member of the Green & White with a second round 71.
Ohio State set or tied two tournament records and leads the event. The Buckeyes shot 273 in round to reset the tournament marks for lowest score over 18-holes and lowest first round score. Ohio State’s put up a 274 in round two to score 547 on the day and take an 11-stroke lead over Xavier. XU shot 274 in round one and 282 in the second round (556). Miami (Ohio) is third (280-280-560) followed by Eastern Kentucky (279-283-562). The host Marshall is in fifth (279-28-564).
Xavier’s Sebastian MacLean reset two individual tournament records. MacLean’s opening round score of 63 is a new Marshall Invitational mark. The previous record was a 65 which was charted on five different occasions, most recently by Rhode Island’s Brad Valios in 2008. His 63 also tied the Guyan course record. MacLean recorded a 69 in round two and leads Miami’s Nathan Sutherland (67-68-135) by three strokes. Ohio State’s Jamie Sindelar sits in third (70-66-136) followed by a quartet of golfers in fourth with a 137; Xavier’s Herbert Day (70-67), Miami’s Matt Stasiak (70-67), Eastern Kentucky’s Brian Fister (67-70), and Miami’s Austin Kelly (72-65).
