ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University men's golf team opened the BGSU John Piper Invitational in seventh place and junior John Mlynarski currently sits in 12th after the first round of play.
Mlynarski shot an opening-round 74 with 37's on the front and back nine. Byron Firestone had the second-best score for the Bobcats with a 75, which puts him in a tie for 23rd. Paul Grauer shot an Ohio-best 34 on the front nine and finished with a 76. Teammates Bradley Lucas and Chuck Nettles also finished with 76's as Lucas improved four strokes down the stretch.
Bowling Green stands at the top of the team leaderboard with a 291. Also breaking 300 were Wright State with a 295, the University of Indianapolis and Cleveland State at 297 and Dayton at 299. Overall, the 'Cats are just outside the top five with a total of 301.
Drew Preston of Bowling Green has the lead on the individual leaderboard with a first-round 70. He sits one stroke ahead of Cody Fizari of Wright State, Robert Gleixner of Indianpolis and Brad Winters from Valparaiso. Four golfers are tied for fifth place at even par.
