RICHMOND, Ky. - After the first round of the Eastern Kentucky Spring Invitational, the Ohio women's golf squad sits in ninth place in the 12-team event.

Going up against wind chills in the 30s, Shanna Siefke's (Toledo, Ohio) 82 paced the Ohio effort through the first 18 holes of the three-day tournament, and has her in a tie for 18th place. She shot a 39 on the back nine, the best nine-hole score for an Ohio golfer on the day.

Meredith Waterston (Bloomington, Minn.) was just behind Siefke with an 83 in the first round, which has her tied for 23rd. Kristen Mautz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) sits third on Ohio's card following Thursday's results with a first-round 86 that has her tied for 37th.

"Shanna [Siefke] and Meredith [Waterston] actually struggled off their first couple holes, but then they started swinging better and making a couple puts," Ohio Assistant Director of Golf Jeff Hetler said. "Eighty-Two and 83 is not bad considering the conditions."

Filling out Ohio's card was Lindsay Bergman's (Blacklick, Ohio) 88, which has her tied for 48th. Katie Stafford (Phoenix, Ariz.) also recorded a 94 in the first day of the tournament to sit in a tie for 65th.

Western Kentucky's Emily Wolff and Austin Peay's Angie Manzitto tied for the first round individual lead with three-over 75s to lead the field of 75 golfers.

Ohio's composite team score of 339 is five strokes behind Austin Peay for eighth and eight strokes ahead of West Georgia in 10th. Western Kentucky leads the 12-team field with a 324.

"I would say that 80 was a good score today [with the weather conditions]," Hetler said. "I would expect at least four of my golfers to be around 80, but we just did not play well."

The start of Thursday's first round was delayed two hours because of the cold weather, a practice that expected to continue Friday and Saturday. The anticipated start for Friday calls for tee times at 10 a.m.
