COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio men's golf team got 24 holes in Saturday at the Kepler Intercollegiate before the rains came, and will enter Sunday's action in 10th place with one round officially in the books.
Competing in the 16-team tournament, hosted by Ohio State, the Bobcats more than held their own against the field that includes 10 Big Ten teams. Ohio posted a 309 in the first round, six strokes behind Purdue for ninth and four ahead of Michigan in 11th.
Mark Cimarolli (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the Ohio effort through the first 18 holes with a four-over 75, which had him tied for 21st overall heading into the second round. Ryan Siekmann (Dublin, Ohio) was second on Ohio's card through the first round with a five-over 76, which had him tied for 24th. Mark Phillips (Hilliard, Ohio) was just one stroke behind teammate Siekmann with a 77 to sit in a tie for 30th.
Chad Warmbein (McMurray, Pa.) with a plus-10 81, and Grant Christman (Columbus, Ohio) with a 12-over 83, rounded out Ohio's line-up in ties for 64th and 79th, respectively. Competing as an individual, Ohio's Jason Ferrante (Dublin, Ohio) also shot an 83 in the first round.
After 18 holes, Louisville was in the team lead with an eight-over 292. South Carolina's George Bryan, Louisville's Adam Hadwin and Northwestern's Kyle Moore were tied for the individual lead at minus-1.
Play was suspended around 2 p.m., Saturday due to adverse weather conditions with the field anywhere between six and nine holes into the second round. Start time for resumption of the second round on Sunday will be determined by the weather. Sunday's regularly scheduled final round will follow, weather permitting.
