Â
Ohio scored four runs on six hits with one error, while Akron tallied 21 runs on 17 hits with one error.
Â
Ohio was led at the plate by a three-RBI performance from junior outfielder Cam Boyd (Villa Hills, Ky.) that included two hits and a home run. Senior infielder Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) also tallied three RBI's in the context, all of which came in the seventh on a double. Fifth year, infielder Will Henson (Chicago, Ill.) also tallied an RBI with one hit and a walk.
Â
Freshman righty Mason Gass (Oakdale, Pa.) got the start for the Bobcats. In three and one-third innings, Gass had a scoreless first before allowing seven runs on eight hits with one strikeout.
Â
The Zips got on the board first with a solo homer in the second to take a 1-0 advantage. Two more homers in the third would extend the Akron lead to 5-0.
Â
The Bobcats responded in the bottom half of the third with three runs after loading the bases with two outs. Boyd and Henson recorded back-to-back two-out RBI singles after redshirt freshman infielder Grant Wilson (Bradenton, Fla.) started the inning with a double. Going into the game's middle innings, the Bobcats trailed the Zips 5-3.
Â
Akron immediately responded with nine runs in the fourth to make it a 14-3 game. The Zips would add another in the fifth, making it 15-3.
Â
Boyd tallied his third RBI of the game in the fifth when he sent a solo homer over the left field fence to bring the deficit to 15-4.
Â
Two more runs would cross to score in the sixth for the Zips to re-extend their lead to 17-4. In the seventh, Akron extended it to 21-4.
Â
The Bobcats were able to load the bases in the seventh before Shepherd tallied a bases-clearing double to make it 21-7. Three runs weren't enough to avoid a run-rule as Ohio fell in game one of the three-game series.
Â
Up next, Ohio will continue its series with Akron tomorrow (April 25). That game will get started at 4 p.m. and can be seen on YouTube.
