PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio –After an incredible weekend in Athens, Ohio football heads to Columbus to take on top-ranked Ohio State, while Ohio volleyball heads to Dayton for a top-10 matchup with Pitt. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System.

The Ohio football team (1-1) is back in action after an exciting weekend in Athens when they head to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 13 to take on No. 1 Ohio State (2-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.ET inside Ohio Stadium and can be seen nationally on Peacock. The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield, presented by Holzer Health System. Veteran Ohio radio personality Marty Bannister is reprising his role as Ohio's play-by-play broadcaster. Bannister will be joined by color analyst Rob Cornelius, who has been a part of the broadcasts for more than two decades. 

This matchup marks the Bobcats' and the Buckeyes' eighth time meeting since 1899. Ohio is 0-6 in the series. The last time the two teams met was in 2010. This also marks the first time the Bobcats will take on the top-ranked team in the nation and the highest since that 2010 matchup with the Buckeyes when Ohio State was ranked second. 

Ohio is coming off a statement 17-10 victory over West Virginia in Athens on Saturday. In front of a record-setting 26,740 fans, junior wide receiver Chase Hendricks stood out on the offensive end with 121 receiving yards and a touchdown on eight receptions. The running game for Ohio also found a lot of success, with 182 total rushing yards, including 87 from graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro and 66 from redshirt senior running back Sieh BanguraOn defense, junior tackle Nehemiah Dukes had a breakout game with six tackles, including one sack and one tackle for loss. Sophomore safety DJ Walker led Ohio with seven tackles, including five solo stops.

Ohio State is 2-0 this season after defeating Texas to open the season, before knocking off Grambling State, 70-0, on Saturday in Columbus. The Buckeyes had 651 yards in total offense with 377 coming through the air. Julian Sayin completed 18-of-19 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half. Jeremiah Smith finished with five catches, 119 yards and two scores to lead the receiving corps. The Buckeyes rushed for 274 yards with Bo Jackson leading the way with 108 yards gained on nine carries.

The Ohio men's golf team opens the 2025-26 season this week with two tournaments. The week begins Sept. 8-9 at the 2025 Joe Feaganes Invitational. The two-day event is hosted by Marshall at the Guyan Golf and Country Club. The event begins on Monday, Sept. 8 with 36 holes, before concluding on Tuesday, Sept. 9 with 18 holes. Ohio then heads to Rochester Hills, Mich. Sept. 13-14 for the 2025 Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate. The event is hosted by Oakland at the Katke-Cousins Golf Club. The event begins on Saturday, Sept. 13 with two rounds, before concluding on Sunday, Sept. 14 with the final 18 holes. 

Competing at the Joe Feaganes Invitational are Dayton, Purdue Fort Wayne, CMU, NKU, Ohio, Youngstown State, Marshall, Longwood, Radford, Bellarmine, EKU, Murray State, Missouri State, Celeveland State and Robert Morris. 

Playing for the Bobcats are senior Carson Trafford, Jack O'Donnell, Will Kates, Nathaniel Gray Lamont and freshmen Jack Flores and Rylan Hall.

Competing at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate are Purdue Fort Wayne, Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, IU Indy, Oakland, Ohio, NKU, Bowling Green, Toledo, Cleveland State, Wright State and Butler.

The Ohio field hockey team (0-3) heads west to California for three matches this week. They week begins on Thursday, Sept. 11 when Ohio takes on UC Davis in Davis, Calif. First touch is set for 3 p.. ET at the Aggie Filed Hockey Complex and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then heads to Stanford, Calif. for a matchup with Stanford that is set to begin at 6 p.m.ET at the Varsity Field Hockey Turff and can be seen on ACCNX. The west coach road trip concludes on Sunday, Sept. 14 in Berkeley, Calif. when Ohio take on Cal. Game time is set for 4 p.m. ET at Underhill Field and can be seen on ACCNX. 

UC Davis is currently 2-1 and is coming off a win at home against Ball State on Friday. Stanford is currently 2-2 after falling to Harvard in a shootout on Sunday at home, while Cal is currently 2-2 after defeating Ball State on Sunday at home. 

Ohio enters the week 0-2 after falling to Saint Louis, 3-1, on the road on Saturday afternoon.

The Ohio volleyball team (2-4) is back in action for the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational Sept. 12-14. The three-day tournament is hosted by Wright State at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. The weekend begins on Friday, Sept. 12 when Ohio takes on Ohio State (1-3). First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET. Ohio is back on action on Saturday, Sept. 13 against No. 9 Pitt (4-2), which is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET. The weekend concludes on Sunday, Sept. 14 against host Wright State (3-2). First serve is set for 2 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio State enters the matchup at 1-3 and is coming off a loss against No. 12 Florida on Sunday in Columbus. Pitt is currently 4-2 overall and the ninth-ranked team in the country, with the Panthers taking on Kentucky on Wednesday before taking on the Bobcats. Host Wright State is currently 3-2 overall and is coming off a win against Cal on Saturday after falling to No. 1 Nebraska on Friday night. 

Ohio is currently 2-4 overall and is coming off a trip to the Chattanooga Classic where the Bobcats defeated host Chattanooga on Friday. In that mathc, Freshman Mady Long led Ohio's offense with a season-high 16 kills. Long along recorded 18 points, two aces and five digs. Junior Torre Kildow finished second on the team in kills with 14 total. Junior Gentry Brown and freshman Bailey Blair contributed 11 kills each. Senior Kendall White distributed a season-high 45 assists


SOCCER
Sept. 14 / at Central Michigan / Mount Pleasant, Mich. / CMU Soccer Complex / 1 p.m. ET / Watch / Live Stats 

The Ohio soccer team (2-4-1, 0-0-0 MAC) opens Mid-American Conference play on Sunday, Sept. 14 when the Bobcats head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Central Michigan (0-5, 0-0-0 MAC). First touch is set for 1 p.m. ET and can be seen on the CMU website. 

Central Michigan is currently 0-5 and is coming off a loss against South Dakota on Sunday and will face off with Wright State on Thursday before hosting the Bobcats.

Ohio is coming off a 0-1-1 week where Ohio tied NKU on Thursday in Athens, before falling to Big Ten opponent Indiana, 1-0, in Bloomington on Sunday.
