The Zips looked to get on the board first with a free kick in the first minute of play, forcing Sloma to make an early save. The Bobcats were able to respond in the ninth minute with a shot by Murray but missed the target.

Ohio kept the pressure on the Akron defense, playing a majority of the first half on Akron's side of the field.  Brooker added two shots for the Bobcats in the 16th and 20th minutes of play, both shots forced the Akron keeper to make a save. The Zips had exchanged shots with the Bobcats in the 19th and 22nd minute, both were stopped by the Ohio defense, one saved by Sloma, and one shot was blocked.

Robinson tried to put the Bobcats ahead in the 23rd minute, but her shot would be denied by the Zips' keeper. Tostevin and Mensel both attempted shots, but were off target, keeping the score tied at 0-0.

Akron had an offensive chance in the 38th minute, but the shot was blocked in by the Ohio defense. Ohio's last chance of the half came in the 42nd minute of play off of a Tostevin header, but the redirection was unable to find the back of the net.
