ATHENS, Ohio — The Ohio baseball team (8-23, 4-11 Mid-American Conference) was routed by Marshall 10-5 on Wednesday evening.
"The name of the game today is we gave them too many freebies, walks, hit by pitch errors, and they took advantage of it. And that's what a good team does. They take advantage of those mistakes," head coach
Craig Moore said.
Marshall (10-17, 5-7 Sun Belt Conference) took the lead with four runs in the top of the first and an added run in the top of the second. However, Ohio didn't stay silent long after that.
Ohio brought in a run in the bottom of the second when redshirt sophomore Cam Bryant (Miamisburg, Ohio) reached on an error by the third baseman. Two at-bats later, graduate student Trenton Neuer (Nicholasville, Ky.) knocked a single to left center to score two for Ohio.
The Bobcats chipped away at the Thundering Herd's lead again in the bottom of the fifth, which eventually tied the game. Sophomore Trae Cassidy (Northville, Mich.) reached on a fielder's choice to score Neuer and Bryant walked to score Cassidy.
"We have a lot of confidence in the offense. I truly don't believe that we're ever out of any game, no matter what the score is, no matter what the depth is. We've proven that over the course of the year," Moore said.
The brief stalemate didn't take too much away from the Thundering Herd, who added on three runs in the top of the sixth. A two-run home run in the top of the seventh put the final touch on the Thundering Herd's five-run victory.
Alongside Neuer, four other Bobcats had hits, including redshirt senior Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.), sophomore Pauly Mancino (Westlake, Ohio) and graduate student Blake Reed (Gahanna, Ohio). Dolan also led the Bobcats in walks with two.
Ohio used five arms in the loss. Graduate student
Jacob Tate's (Louisville, Tenn.) two and two-thirds on the mound was the longest outing for Ohio. He was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits.
Senior
Tyler Peck (Oak Creek, Wis.) and sophomore
Trey Barkman (Kidron, Ohio) each led the team with two strikeouts during their respective relief appearances.
Ohio will be back in action on Friday (April 11) to take on VMI. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Bob Wren Stadium and the game can be viewed on YouTube at OhioBobcatStudios.
