PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio –Baseball season is officially upon us, while softball heads to Arizona and swim and dive, wrestling and track and field start making their final pushes towards MAC Championship time! Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Ohio men's basketball team (12-11, 6-4 MAC) is back in action this week for back-to-back pivotal MAC matchups on the road. The week starts on Tuesday, Feb. 11 when Ohio heads to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on Bowling Gren (9-14, 3-7 MAC). TIp-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the Stroh Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then heads to Kent, Ohio to take on Kent State (15-8, 5-5 MAC) on national TV on Friday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside the M.A.C. Center can can be seen on CBS Sports Network. 

Ohio is coming off of a 1-1 week that saw the Bobcats take down Western Michigan before falling to App State. Redshirt sophomore guard AJ Brown led the Bobcats this past week. Overall, Brown averaged 17.5 points and 5.0 rebounds a game, while shooting .520 from the field and .857 from the line. He also added 1.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.5 blocks a game. In Ohio 94-69 win over Western Michigan on Feb. 4, Brown scored 17 points, going 6-of-10 from the field, 2-of-5 from three and 3-of-3 from the line. He also added four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block in the victory. On Feb, 8 against App State, Brown scored a team-high 18 points, going 7-of-15 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line, while grabbing six rebounds, dished out one assist and had one steal in 33 minutes on the court.

Bowling Green enters the matchup with Ohio with a a 9-14 overall mark and a 3-7 record in conference play. The Falcons are coming off a week of back-to-back wins that saw them defeat NIU and Costal Carolina. Kent State is 15-8 overall and 5-5 in MAC play and are coming off wins against Central Michigan and Arkansas State and will face CMU on Tuesday before hosting the Bobcats. This is the second meeting between the two teams this season, with Ohio winning 61-57 in Athens on Jan. 24. 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Ohio women's basketball (4-17, 2-9 MAC) will has the midweek off this week before returning to Athens on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they host Buffalo (19-4, 8-3 MAC). Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. inside the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Against Southern Miss. on Saturday, Graduate student Anyssa Jones led the team in scoring with 14 points. Sophomore Bailey Tabeling also finished in double figures with 10 points total. Against CMU earlier in the week, senior Kennedi Watkins led the team with a total of 17 points. Jones recorded a team-high seven rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Buffalo enters the matchup with the Bobcats with a 19-4 overall record and an 8-3 mark in MAC play and are coming off back-to-back losses last week to Toledo and Costal Carolina. 

WOMEN'S GOLF
Feb. 9-11 / at 2025 Advance Golf Partners Collegiate / Palm City, Fla. / Hammock Creek GC / All Day / Live Results 

The Ohio women's golf team opens the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 9-11 at the 2025 Advance Golf Partners Collegiate hosted by UNCG at the Hammock Creek GC in Palm City, Fla. The three-day event will see the Bobcats play 18 holes each day beginning on Sunday and wrapping up on Tuesday. 

Competing in the event is; Virginia Tech, Merrimack, Georgia State, Little Rock, East Tennessee, Memphis, Lipscomb, App State, Southern Illinois, Elon, Arkansas State, UNCG, Towson, Bryant, Ohio, Morehead State, Jacksonville State and Bucknell. 

Competing for Ohio in this year's event are sophomore Morgan Rodgers, sophomore Zoe Luebbers, junior Mackenzie McRee, senior Sydney Longstreth and sophomore Anna Coccia, while freshman Saylor Wharff competes as an individual.  

The Bobcats last competed Oct. 21-22 at the Dayton Flyer Invitational where they placed third overall, while McRee led the Bobcats with a tie for fourth place.

The Ohio softball team (4-0) is back in action this weekend for the second week of the season Feb. 14-16 when they head out west to Tucson, Ariz. for the 2025 Bear Down Fiesta hosted by #17 Arizona at Hillenbrand Stadium. Ohio's weekend starts on Friday, Feb. 14 at 12 p.m. ET against Cal State Fullerton (4-1), before returning to action at 2:30 p.m. ET against South Alabama (4-1). On Saturday, Feb. 15, Ohio opens the day at 2:30 p.m. ET to take on South Alabama once again, before returning to the diamond at 5 p.m .to take on No. 17 Arizona (5-1). That game can be seen on ESPN+. The Bobcats wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 16 against Cal State Fullerton at 1:30 p.m ET. All three teams that the Bobcats will face off against this weekend competed in the 2024 NCAA Toutnament. 

Ohio is coming off 4-0 opening weekend at the 2025 Elon Softball Classic, where the Bobcats defeated NC Central, Elon, UConn and UNCG. The weekend saw Ohio score 52 total runs on 52 hits in four games. Sophomore first baseman led the Ohio offense this past weekend at the 2025 Elon Softball Classic, where the Bobcats went 4-0. Overall, Farmer hit .588with 10 hits in 17 at bats, with two doubles, 13 RBI, two runs scored and one walk. She also recorded a .579 on base percentage and a .706 slugging percentage. While, senior catcher Emma Hoffner helped lead the Ohio softball team to a 4-0 weekend at the 2025 Elon Softball Classic. Overall, Hoffner hit .583 with seven hits in 12 at bats, recorded two doubles, one triple, a grand slam and scored eight runs while driving in 12. She recorded 14 total bases, drew five walks and was hit by a pitch and did not strikeout, while recording a .722 on base percentage and a 1.167 slugging percentage. 

Cal State Fullerton opened the season hosting the Easton Classic this past weekend, going 4-1 overall, with their only loss to No. 3 Oklahoma. South Alabama is currently 4-1 and hosted the South Alabama Invitational last weekend, with their only loss to UIC. Meanwhile, Arizona is 5-1 overall and is coming off hosting the Candrea Classic, falling only to Washington. 
BASEBALL

The Ohio baseball team (0-0) opens the 2025 season this weekend when they head to Spartanburg, S.C. for a three-game series with Wofford Feb. 14-16. The weekend begins on Friday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. ET, before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. ET. All three games will take place at Russell C. King Field. 

Ohio finished last season, 18-32 and 13-17 in MAC play, while Wofford finished 2024 with a 42-20 overall mark and were crowned Southern Conference Champions and advanced to NCAA Regionals. 

WRESTLING
Feb. 14 / at SIUE / Edwardsville, Ill. / First Community Arena / 7 p.m. ET  / ESPN+ / Watch 

The Ohio wresting team (7-3, 5-1 MAC) is back in action for another MAC dual against SIU Edwardsville (6-6, 3-1 MAC) on Friday, Feb. 14. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET inside First Community Arena and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 29-11 Grudge Match victory over Kent State last Friday. Redshirt junior Garrett Thompson earned a shutout in the 174-pound weight class. Due to his great defense and then switch to offense in the third period, Thompson gained four points in one move, bringing the match to 16-0 at 7:01.

SIUE is 6-6 overall and 3-1 in MAC duals and are coming off a loss at Cal Poly on Feb. 2 on the road. 

SWIM AND DIVE

The Ohio swimming and diving team heads to Columbus, Ohio for their final tune-up before the 2025 MAC Championships Feb. 14-16 at the 2025 Ohio State Winter Invite. The three-day event will take place inside McCorkle Aquatic Pavillion and can be seen on BIG+. 

Ohio is coming off a 272.5-79.5 victory over Eastern Michigan on Senior Day Jan. 31-Feb. 1 in Athens. Sophomore Zita Szoke was named MAC Swimmer of the Week for her performance during the meet. Szoke helped lead the Ohio swim team to a 272.5-79.5 victory over Eastern Michigan last weekend in Athens. Szoke's weekend started on Friday with the 200 freestyle relay, where the Bobcats won with a time of 1:31.68. Szoke's 50 split of 22.17 set a new Ohio pool and school record. She then picked up a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.12, before wrapping up the night with the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:39.59.

On Saturday, Szoke was back in the pool in the 200 medley relay, placing first with a time of 1:38.50. The finish set a new school record for the Bobcats in the event, shaving .47 off the previous record of 1:38.97 that was set last year. She also took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.01, before wrapping up the weekend in the 400 freestyle relay, placing first with a time of 3:25.42

After the OSU Winter Invite, Ohio will head to Buffalo, N.Y. Feb. 26-March first for the 2025 MAC Championships. 

TRACK AND FIELD

The Ohio track and field team is back in action for two meets this week. Members of the Bobcats will head to Boston, Mass. Feb. 14-15 for the 2025 David Hemery Valentine Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 9 a.m. AT at the Track and Tennis Center and can be seen on FloTrack. Others will head to Huntington, W. Va. for the 2025 Marshall Invitational Feb. 14-15 inside the Chris Cline Athletics Complex. Friday's event's are set to begin at 5 p.m. ET, with Saturday set to start at 10:30 a.m. ET. 

Ohio is coming off a successful weekend at the Gem City Invite in Dayton, Ohio last weekend. There were several highlights to the day including a season-best time by Ohio in the women's 4x400m relay. Sophomore Jada Irwin, junior Ashley Long), senior Taja Booker and freshman Ava Kincaid placed second with a time of 3:52.35. Another top performance of the day was freshman Kaitlyn Stewart's  collegiate debut in the women's 800m. Stewart won the event with an impressive time of 2:11.24.

MEN'S GOLF
Feb. 16-18 / at 2025 Mesquite Desert Classic / Mesquite, Nev. / CasaBlanca Golf Club / All Day / Live Results 

Ohio men's golf opens the spring portion of their schedule this week, heading to Mesquite, Nev. Feb. 16-18 for the 2025 Mesquite Desert Classic at the CasaBlanca Golf Club. The three-day event will begin with 18 homes on Sunday, Feb. 16, with round two on Monday, Feb. 17, with the third and final round set to take place on Tuesday, Feb. 18. 

Competing in this year's event are: Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Ohio, Idaho, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Bellarmine, Utah Valley, Seattle, Utah Tech, Cal Poly and Bowling Green. 

Ohio last competed Oct. 25-27 at the 2024 White Sands Beach Bahamas Invite, where the Bobcats placed 11th overall.
