PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – Basketball season has arrived and it's a Black Out in Peden Tuesday night for the 'Battle of the Bricks'! Plus, field hockey opens play at the 2025 MAC Tournament. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints, presented by Memorial Health System. 

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (5-3, 3-1 MAC) is set to open "midweek MACtion" at home on Tuesday, Nov. 4 when they host rival Miami (5-3, 4-0 MAC) for the 102nd Battle of the Bricks. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium and can be seen on ESPN2 Network with Clay Matvick and Chase Daniel on the call. 
 
The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield, presented by Holzer Health System. Veteran Ohio radio personality Marty Bannister is reprising his role as Ohio's play-by-play broadcaster. Bannister will be joined by color analyst Rob Cornelius, who has been a part of the broadcasts for more than two decades. 

The Bobcats and the RedHawks have met 101 times, posting a series record of 43-56-2 since their first face-off in 1908.  Ohio fell short in the 100th Battle of the Bricks (Oct. 19, 2024) but bounced back to make history in Detroit as the two teams met in a conference championship for the first time (Dec. 7, 2024). Ohio's 38-3 victory not only marked the program's first MAC Championship since 1968 but the largest margin of victory in a MAC Championship as well as the first time a team has been held to no touchdowns in a Championship game.

Ohio is coming off a 28-21 win at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 25 in Ypsilanti. On offense, Ohio had several record-breaking performances again. Graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro (Tempe, Ariz) had one of the best passing games of his career after putting up a career-high 315 passing yards that included two touchdowns. Two Bobcats had 100-plus receiving yards, with junior wide receiver Chase Hendricks (St. Louis, Mo.) recording 112 yards on 10 catches with two touchdowns, and redshirt junior wide receiver Rodney Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallying 103 yards. For Hendricks, his 100-yard performance was the sixth such game of his season. 

On the ground, graduate student running back Sieh Bangura (Bowie, Md.) tallied two touchdowns against Eastern Michigan with 100 total rush yards. Navarro also had a big day in the run game with 63 yards, including a 33-yard rush in the fourth quarter.  

The Bobcats were led on defense by junior safety Jalen Thomeson, who recorded 11 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss. The Bobcats' lone turnover on the day was a fumble forced by redshirt senior Pius Odjugo. The fumble was recovered by freshman linebacker Charlie Christopher, who also recorded 10 tackles in the effort. In the passing game, graduate student Tank Pearson led Ohio with two pass breakups.  

Miami is coming off a 26-27 win against Western Michigan on Oct. 25. The RedHawks are currently 5-3, posting a 4-0 record against MAC opponents. As a team, they average 26 points on 166.6 rushing yards and 199.88 passing yards per game. In the air, sixth year quarterback Dequan Finn is 89-for-155 with seven touchdowns and five interceptions on 1,257 yards across seven games.

The Ohio men's basketball team (0-0) opens the 2025-26 season this week beginning on Monday, Nov. 3 when Ohio hosts Arkansas State (0-0) for the MAC-SBC Challenge. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET insice the Convocation Center. Ohio in back in action on Thursday, Nov. 6 when the Bobcats host Illinois State (0-0) at 7 p.m. ET inside the Convo. Both matchups can be seen on ESPN+ where Marty Bannister, Rob Cornelius and Gabe Genovesi will have the call.

Jason Toy begins his second season on the mic for the Bobcats and will be joined by Dave Cecutti. The Red Wolves are under first-year head coach Ryan Pannone. Pannone comes to Jonesboro with 23 years of experience, has built a reputation as one of the nation's top offensive minds and player-development coaches.Arkansas State finished last season, 25-11 overall and 1305 in the Sun Belt, falling to Troy in the SBC Championship game and advancing to the second round of the 2025 NIT. The Red Wolves were selected to finish second in the 2025 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, while junior guard Chandler Jackson earned a spot on the Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team. 

For Illinois State, The Redbirds return players that combined to score 1,786 points from last season — 65.49 percent of the team's scoring — which is the fifth-highest total in the NCAA returning, and the team's returning scoring percentage is 10th-best heading into the 2025-26 season. Returning three of its top four scorers from last season, including two All-Missouri Valley Conference selections, the 2025-26 Illinois State men's basketball team — and players on the team — have high expectations put on it from numerous preseason prognostications. Mid-Major Madness, Lindy's Basketball Magazine, Blue Ribbon Basketball Mazagine, and the MVC media poll have the Redbirds picked to win the MVC in 2025-26. Mid-Major Madness, Lindy's Basketball Magazine, and Blue Ribbon all have returning forward Chase Walker named as the Preseason Player of the Year, while Johnny Kinziger was named to the Preseason First Team by Blue Ribbon Basketball Magazine and Lindy's Basketball Magazine. The Field of 68 ranked Illinois State as the #3 Mid-Major Team in the country in their preseason poll, while also naming Walker the Mid-Major Preseason Player of the Year.

The Ohio women's basketball team (0-0) opens the 2025-26 season this week starting on Monday, Nov. 3 when the Bobcats head to San Marcos, Texas to take on Texas State (0-0). Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET inside the Strahan Arena at the University Events Center and can be seen on ESPN+. Ohio then returns to Athens on Sunday, Nov. 9 when Ohio hosts Columbia (0-0). Tip0ff is set for Noon ET insdie the Convocation Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio conclude the 2024-25 season with a 6-23 overall and 4-14 conference record. The Bobcats enter the season with nine returners and five newcomers including two freshmen and three transfers. Last season, Ohio averaged 58.2 PPG; shooting 36.9 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from the arc and 68.2 percent from the line. The team averaged 31.1 rebounds, 10.2 assists and 8.7 steals per game. Ohio forced 16.7 turnovers per game and averaged 12.3 points off turnovers. Last season, Ohio's opponents averaged 73.2 PPG; shooting 42.7 percent from the field, 33.0 percent from the arc and 71.1 percent from the line. Opponents averaged 42.7 rebounds, 17.6 assists and 9.0 steals per game. Opponents forced Ohio to give up 18.0 turnovers per game and averaged 18.0 points off turnovers.  

Texas State concluded the 2024-25 season with a 13-17 overall and 7-11 conference record. The Bobcats clinched a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament before losing to Marshall in the second round, 68-62. Last season, Texas State averaged 62.1 PPG; shooting 39.2 percent from the field, 27.5 percent from the arc and 69.3 percent from the line. The team averaged 35.4 rebounds, 11.4 assists and 8.0 steals per game. Texas State forced 17.4 turnovers per game and averaged 16.2 points off turnovers.

Columbia is coming off a 2024-25 campaign in which it won the outright Ivy League Regular Season Championship. It was the program's third straight Ivy League title overall. Griffith led Columbia to an overall record of 24-7 with a 13-1 Ivy League mark. The Lions advanced to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection for the second consecutive season and picked up their first NCAA Tournament win. Columbia rallied from 13 points down to defeat Washington, 63-60, in Chapel Hill.

he Ohio field hockey team (5-12) has earned the sixth seed in the 2025 Mid-American Conference Tournament Oct. 5-8 in Harrisonburg, Va. at the JMU Field Hockey Complex, the league announced this afternoon (Oct. 31). Ohio will take on No. 3 Appalachian State (13-5) in the MAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 2:30 p.m. ET. The match can be seen on ESPN+. 

With a win, Ohio will take on No. 2 UMass (15-3) in the Semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m. ET.  the 2025 MAC Championship game will take place on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Noon ET. All the matchup can be seen on ESPN+. 

James Madison hosts this year's tournament after winning the 2024 MAC Regualr Season. The three-day event will take place Nov. 5-8 at the JMU Field Hockey Complex. 

The Bobcats enter the 2025 MAC Tournament as the sixth seed with a 3-6 conference mark and 11 total points. This season, the Bobcats picked up wins over UMass, Kent State and Ball State.

The Ohio volleyball team (11-15, 9-5 MAC) looks to continue their hot streak this week when they head to DeKalb, Ill. for their final road trip of the 2025 regular season. The Bobcats and Northern Illinois (11-12, 4-10 MAC) will open the weekend on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. ET on Victor E. Court. The two teams wrap up the weekend on Saturday, Nov. 8 when Ohio and the Huskies battle it out at 5 p.m. ET. That matchup can be seen on ESPN+. 

NIU is currently 11-12 overall and 4-10 in MAC play. The Huskies are coming off a 1-2 week that saw NIU defeat Buffalo on Friday, but fall to Western Michigan on Tuesday and the Bulls on Saturday. 

Ohio is coming off a 3-0 week that saw sweeps of Kent State and Central Michigan and a four-set victory against CMU on Saturday, Ohio have currently won 10 of their last 11 and sit in fourth place in the MAC standings with two weekends remaining. 

On Saturday at CMU, Ohio finished with a .287 attack percentage, 54 kills, six aces, nine blocks, 48 assists and 42 digs. Central Michigan finished with a .193 attack percentage, 44 kills, four aces, eight blocks, 38 assists and 43 digs. During the game, sophomore Bryn Janke reached the 1,000 career assist milestone after recording her 13th assist of the game. Janke led the team in assists with 22 total while sophomore Lexi Grissett added 15 assists. Grissett also recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 11 digs. Junior Torre Kildow led the team in kills with 13 total in addition to tallying 14.0 points and two blocks. Junior Gentry Brown recorded a team-high 15.5 points in addition to 12 kill, two aces, three blocks and seven digs. 

SWIM AND DIVE
Nov. 7 / vs Ball State / Muncie, Ind. / Lewellen Aquatic Center / 5 p.m. ET 

The Ohio swim and dive team (2-0) is back in action this Friday, Nov. 7 when Ohio heads to Mincie, Ind. to take on Ball State (). The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. 

Ball State is 1-0 to open the season after defeating Toledo, 221-78 on  Oct. 25 in Toledo. 

Ohio is 2-0 to open the season after defeating both Marshall and Buffalo on the season opening tri-meet Oct. 24-25 in Athens. Ohio defeated Buffalo 213-147 and Marshall 247-106. 

Junior Zita Szoke was named the MAC Swimmer of the Week for her performance during the tri-meet. Szoke won six total events. Szoke opened the weekend on Friday in the 200 free relay, with the Bobcats' 'A' team placing first with a time of 1:30.78. In the 100 free, Szoke cruised to a first-place finish with a time of 48.03, before wrapping up the night in the 400-yard medley relay, where the Ohio 'A' team placed first with a time of 3:38.5. Szoke's times in the 50-yard free and 100-yard free lead the conference, and rank her 32nd in the 50-yard free, and ranked 8th for the 100-yard free in the NCAA.

WRESTLING

The Ohio wrestling team opens the 2025-26 home slate on Saturday, Nov. 8 with the Ohio Showcase. The six-team event will see three mats - a DI, DII and DIII mat, all run at the same time. The Ohio Showcase is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET inside the Convocation Center. The DI meet will be streamed on ESPN+, while the other two mats can be seen on YouTube. The DI mat will see Ohio take on Morgan State, while the DII mat is Ashland against Indy and the DIII mat is Baldwin Wallace against UW-Lacrosse. 

The Bobcats finished last season with an 8-4 overall record and 6-2 in MAC competition, showing steady improvement and resilience throughout the dual slate.

The Bobcats return several proven contributors, including captains Garrett ThompsonSal Perrine, and Zayne Lehman. All three bring experience, toughness, and consistency to the lineup while setting the tone for a driven roster. Thompson remains a driving force for Ohio after an impressive 30-7 record last season, going 10-1 in duals and an undefeated 7-0 in MAC competition. At 174 pounds, he recorded four falls and nine technical falls, earning multiple podium finishes and establishing himself as one of the MAC's top competitors. Perrine, who returns after a season away, is expected to make an immediate impact in the same weight class with his experience and aggressiveness.

Ohio opened the 2025-26 season last Sunday at the Southeast Open.
