ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (5-11, 3-5 MAC) fell to #15 Miami (OH) (12-4, 7-1 MAC) 4-1 on Friday afternoon.
As a team, the Bobcats scored once on two shots in the game, while the RedHawks scored four times on 19 shots. Miami also held the advantage in penalty corners, eight to two.
Individually, the Bobcats were led by freshman
Tiana Nhamoinesu (Thrisk, North Yorkshire), who scored her team leading fifth goal of the season.
In the cage, sophomore
Ash Stephenson (Kingston upon Hull, England), recorded nine saves on 13 shots on net.
The RedHawks opened the game putting pressure on the Bobcat back line, recording a shot early that forced a save from netminder Stephenson. The Miami offense continued to generate scoring chances in the period, capitalizing on a turnover and scoring off a deflection at the 7:04 mark deflection to put Bobcats in a one goal deficit. The Miami defense kept the Ohio attack contained for the rest of the period, ending the quarter with the score 1-0 Miami.
Miami again took initiative to start the second quarter, generating a scoring chance on a penalty corner in the opening minute that forced another save from Stephenson. The RedHawks would continue to generate chances, and scored again off a deflection at the 21:33 mark. Shortly after, Miami would capitalize off another deflection for a 3-0 score line that would hold until halftime.
The third quarter featured back and forth action but few offensive chances, as the RedHawk defense again stymied the Bobcats and prevented any scoring chances.
Miami jumped on the offensive again in the fourth quarter, recording two early shots on net that forced saves from Stephenson. However, their third shot on net got through, giving the RedHawks a 4-0 lead at the 49:12 mark. Minutes later the Bobcats were able to find the back of the net, as freshman Nhamoinesu took a penalty corner pass from senior
Emily Risser (Palmyra, Pa.) and fired a shot into the net to get the Bobcats on the scoreboard. Ohio would generate one more chance with a shot on goal from freshman
Karley DuCoin (Turnersville, NJ), but was largely stymied by the Miami defense as the 4-1 score held until the end of regulation.
The Bobcats will return to action next Friday when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on James Madison, closing out regular season play. First touch is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
