EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Ohio field hockey team defeated Vermont 2-1 in overtime Saturday (Sept. 7) afternoon for its first win of the season.
The first half flew by as goalkeeper Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) fought off Vermont's shots with ease. She collected her first save in the first quarter and ended the afternoon with four total. She and the defense worked to force a stalemate through the first half.
Vermont broke through first in the third quarter with a goal in the 36th minute. However, it didn't take long for junior Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) to even the score. The goal in the 40th minute was Dikotla's first of the season.
Ohio cranked up its defense in the fourth period to keep Vermont off the board. All three of Vermont's shots fell wide, which sent the game into overtime.
The Bobcats took a deep breath as the whistle sounded for overtime. Dikotla got the ball once again, and sent it over to sophomore Natalie LaFleur (Fredricksburg, Va.) LaFleur reared back and scored to give the Bobcats the win. LaFleur now owns two of the Bobcats' three goals this season.
Ohio will be back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon against Michigan State.
