Ohio Baseball Falls in Competitive Midweek Matchup with Marshall

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (16-31, 11-16 MAC) fell to Marshall (18-34, 9-18 SBC) 13-11 in a competitive midweek matchup on Tuesday, May 14. 

Individually, freshman Caleb Karll (Fitchburg, Wis.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and five RBIs, highlighted by a grand slam. Redshirt junior AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) had one run off two hits and recorded two RBIs. Fifth year Alex Finney (Oxford, Mich.) scored two runs off one hit and had one RBI. 

The Bobcats used six pitchers on the mound, sophomore Landon Price (Middle Point, Ohio) was given the loss, allowing three runs on four hits, and struck three one in three innings pitched. Redshirt junior Patrick Straub (Naperville, Ill.) did not allow any runs or hits and struck out one in two innings. Junior Hudson Boncal (Corona, Calif.) pitched two innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walked two and struck out three.  

Marshall was first on the board with a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Bobcats were quick to answer with two runs in the second. With the bases loaded, Dolan singled to left to bring in a run. Ohio took the lead off a groundout for a 2-1 advantage.  

Marshall went on to score the next nine runs to take a 10-2 lead. The Bobcats capitalized off pitching mistakes in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Karll sent the ball over the left fence for a grand slam, setting the score at 10-6.  

Marshall added two to their total in the top of the eighth, but Ohio responded with three runs in the bottoms. The Bobcats scored one off a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, then Rausch singled to left to bring in two runs for a 12-9 deficit.  

After Marshall's one run in the top of the ninth, the Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom to cut into the lead but fell short 13-11. 

The Bobcats return to action to take on Akron on Thursday, May 16, for their final series of the season. First pitch at Bob Wren Stadium is set for 6 p.m. ET and is available to watch on YouTube.
