ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (17-32, 12-17 MAC) split their doubleheader against Akron (15-38, 10-19 MAC) on Thursday, May 16.
GAME ONE: Ohio 7 – Akron 3
Overall, Ohio scored seven runs of 12 hits with one error, while Akron scored three runs on five hits with no errors.
Individually, freshman Caleb Karll (Fitchburg, Wis.) scored two runs on one hit and recorded two RBIs. Senior Gideon Antle (Licking, Mo.) went 2-for-4 at the plate along with one run and one RBI. Graduate Bryce Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored one run on one hit with one RBI.
Junior Dillon Masters (New Albany, Ohio) got the start on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits, walked two and a season high nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Graduate Tim Knapschaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs or hits and walked two.
Akron struck first with one run in the top of the first inning. The Bobcats were quick to answer in the bottom of the inning. Karll doubled down the left line for one RBI, then raced across home plate the next at bat for a 2-1 lead.
The Bobcats gave up one run in the second, then scored two in the third to retake the lead. Antle hit a triple to center field for one RBI. Karll followed with a sacrifice fly for one RBI and the 4-2 lead. Akron hit their second homerun of the game to cut their deficit to one.
The Bobcats scored one run in the fourth to extend their lead back to two runs. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Smith grounded out for a run, followed by a one-RBI single for a 7-3 lead.
The scoring halted for both teams, Ohio won game one 7-3.
GAME TWO: Akron 12, Ohio 3
Individually, Karll went 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded two RBIs. Redshirt junior Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored one run on one hit along with one RBI.
Junior Tyler Peck (Oak Creek, Wis.) pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 12 runs on 11 hits, walked four and struck out four. Sophomore Landon Price (Middle Point, Ohio) did not allow any runs, gave up two hits, walked two and struck out one in 1.2 innings pitched.
Akron scored 12 runs through the first five innings. The Bobcats were able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run innings. Dolan doubled to left to bring in one run. Karll hit a 2-RBI single to set the score at 12-3.
