PAW PRINTS: The Week Ahead in Ohio Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio – Just like that, it's fall break time in Athens! Ohio swim and dive opens the 2024-25 season, while soccer and field hockey hosts games at home. Check out everything that's ahead for Ohio Athletics in this week's Paw Prints. 

FOOTBALL

The Ohio football team (3-2, 1-0 MAC) is back in action this Saturday, Oct. 12 when they head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Central Michigan (3-2, 1-0 MAC). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Kelly/Shorts Stadium and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a bye week, ut last saw action on Sept. 28 for a 30-10 homecoming victory over Akron. Graduate student quarterback Parker Navarro was named the MAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance. Navarro set career highs in single-game yards (331) as well as rushing yards (113), leading the team on the ground with 13 carries and a touchdown. Notably, Navarro tied his single-game record for passing yards (204) as well. He finished the game with three total touchdowns (2 passing, 1 rushing). 

Central Michigan is also coming off a bye week, coming off a 22021 win over San Diego State at home on Sept. 28. CMU MAC win this season came on Sept. 21 in a 37-24 win against Ball State at home. 

WOMEN'S GOLF

The Ohio women's golf team is back in action this weekend when they head to Portage, Mich. for the 2024 Bronco Fall Classic Oct. 7-8. The two-day event is hosted by Western Michigan at the Moors Golf Club. 

Competing at this year's event is Central Michigan, IU Indy, Purdue, Valpo, Cleveland State, Western Michigan, Cal State, Northern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois and Notre Dame. 

On the course, senior Sydney Longstreth (Carmel, Ind.), sophomore Morgan Rodgers (Centerville, Ohio), sophomore Zoe Luebbers (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior Mackenzie McRee (Tucson, Ariz.), freshman Saylor Wharff (Marietta, Ohio) and freshman Ally Turner (Miamisburg, Ohio). 

The Bobcats are coming off a team championship at the 2024 Rocket Classic last week, while junior McRee won the individual championship and was named MAC Golfer of the Week. As a team, Ohio opened the first round on Monday with a 309, followed by a 302 in the second round. The Bobcats concluded the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 295, the lowest round of the day. Individually, McRee led the Bobcats, recording rounds of 76 and 72 on day one, before finishing Tuesday with a 73 for a total tournament score of 221 (+5) and her first-place finish.

The Ohio soccer team (7-1-4, 2-0-3 MAC) is back in action and back in Athens this week. The action begins on Thursday, Oct. 8 when Ohio hosts Eastern Michigan (5-5-3, 1-1-3 MAC). First touch is set for 4 p.m. at Chessa Field. Ohio is then back on the road on Sunday, Oct. 13 when they head to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State (6-4-2, 1-2-2 MAC). First touch is set for 1 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+.

Ohio is coming off a 1-0-0 week where they picked up a 3-1 victory over Akron on Sunday on the road. Individually, junior Ella Deevers (Streetsboro, Ohio) led the Bobcats with three shots on goal, scoring one goal assisted by junior Rayann Pruss(Perrysburg, Ohio), who also tallied one shot on goal. Sophomore Rylee Mensel (Westerville, Ohio) contributed with one shot on goal and one goal, while freshman Lillian Weller (Xenia, Ohio) celebrated her second career goal as a Bobcat.

Eastern Michigan comes to Ohio after picking up its first MAC win of the season on Sunday after defeating Miami, 1-0, at home. Meanwhile, Ball State is coming off back-toback draws against EMU and Buffalo and will take on CMU on Thursday before hosting the Bobcats.

The Ohio volleyball team (6-9, 2-2 MAC) returns to the road for two more MAC matchups this week. The action begins on Thursday, Oct. 10 when they head to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan (5-10, 1-3 MAC). First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET inside University Arena. Ohio then heads to DeKalb. Ill. for a matchup with Northern Illinois (2-12, 0-4 MAC) on Friday, Oct. 11. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET inside Victor E. Court. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio is coming off a 1-1 weekend against Toledo, where the defeated the Rockets on Friday night in five sets, before falling Saturday afternoon in four sets. In the win on Friday, head coach Geoff Carlston recorded his 200th career win at Ohio and is the first head coach in program history to reach the milestone.The Bobcats were led by sophomore Kam Hunt (Sylvania, Ohio) who tallied a game-high 26 kills and career-high 19 digs. Junior Anna Kharchynska (Kyiv Ukraine) tallied 18 kills, five blocks, and six digs. Freshman Darbi Ricketts (Cincinnati, Ohio) also had an impressive outing with 15 kills and 22 digs. Freshman Bryn Janke (Westfield, Wis.) distributed a career-high 38 assists. Defensively, sophomore Kendall Hickey (Fishers, Ind.) was a standout for Ohio as she recorded a career-high 41 digs.

WMU enters the matchup with a 5-10 record and a 1-3 mark in MAC play and is coming off two defeats at Bowling Green this past weekend. NIU is 2-12 overall and 0-4 in MAC play and is coming off two defeats against Akron at home this weekend. NIU will take on Kent State on Thursday before taking on the Bobcats. 

SWIM AND DIVE

The Ohio swimming and diving team opens the 2024-25 season this Friday, Oct. 11 when Ohio hosts Toledo. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. inside the Ohio University Aquatic Center and can be seen on ESPN+. 

Ohio finished last season with a third-place team finish at the MAC Championships in Athens. Zita Szoke (Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary) then became the Bobcats first representative at the NCAA Championships, setting school records in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle event. The Bobcats also returns four All-MAC honorees, including Szoke, Casadie DiBetta (St. Clairsville, Ohio), Julia Strine (Shippensburg, Pa.) and Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.).

The Ohio field hockey team  (4-7, 131 MAC) is back in action for two more games this weekend. The fun begins on Friday, Oct. 11 when Ohio heads to Louisville, Ky. to take on Bellarmine (3-7, 1-2 MAC). First touch is set for 6 p.m. ET at Trager Stadium. Ohio then returns to Athens on Sunday, Oct. 13 when the Bobcats host No. 17 Penn State (6-5). First touch is set for 12 p.m. ET at Pruitt Field. Both matchups can be seen on ESPN+.

Bellarmine enters the matchup with Ohio with a 3-7 overall record and a 1-2 mark in MAC play and is coming off a 4-3 win over Central Michigan on Friday. Penn State is 6-5 overall and is coming off a loss at Northwestern on Sunday. Penn State will take on Ohio State on Friday before heading to Athens.
