ORONO, MAINE – The Ohio field hockey team (1-2) fell to the Maine Black Bears (2-2) Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3) by a score of 5-3 to close out their play in Orono, Maine.
Overall, the Bobcats totaled nine shots with five of them being on target. They were outshot by Maine with seven shots on goal and 12 in total. Ohio was rewarded four corners compared to Maine's seven.
Individually, Ohio was led by fifth year Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.), who recorded one goal and one assist. Senior Meela Kopp (Louisville, Ky.) scored her first goal of the season on her second shot of the game. Freshman Pauline Hartlieb (Leverkusen, Germany) scored the Bobcats' second goal of the game, her first of the season as well.
Senior goalkeeper Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) played all 60 minutes, saving two shots on seven shots faced.
The match began with the Bobcats trailing early, with Maine capitalizing off their first penalty corner to score their first goal of the period. The Black Bears quickly ran down the field and scored again to go up 2-0 in the second minute of the period.
Maine's offense continued their momentum into the second with a quick penalty corner and goal to extend their lead to three, then scored shortly after to set the score 4-0 with twelve minutes to go in the half.
The Bobcats were able to maintain possession and close in on Maine's defense. Freshman Emily Beitzel (Hershey, Pa.) gathered control in the scoring circle and zipped a pass to Whittle to score Ohio's first goal of the match. As time was winding down in the half, Maine looked to add to their lead, but Lotze was able to make the save and give the Bobcats momentum heading into halftime.
Ohio carried their momentum into the third period, with two quick shots and a rebound shot from Hartlieb which found the back of the net, putting the score at 4-2. Ohio continually pressured the Black Bear defense but could not find the back of the net again, trailing entering the final period.
Despite being pressured, Maine rallied to score once more in the 50th minute, giving Maine a 5-2 lead. The Bobcats were looking for another spark on offense and late game heroics. Whittle took the opportunity from a penalty corner to pass it over to fifth year Weslee Littlefield (Oakland, Maine) who then had a great assist for Kopp's first goal of the season. Littlefield gathered her second assist of the weekend in her home stat of Maine,
In the end, Kopp's effort was late for the Bobcats, who ultimately lost 5-3.
