ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (17-25, 14-10 MAC) split their doubleheader against the Ball State Cardinals (30-16, 17-7 MAC) today at Bob Wren Stadium (May 6). The Bobcats won their first game, 5-3, before dropping game two 7-6.
Individually, junior
Alec Patino (Sioux City) led the team with four RBIs on three hits, two of which were home runs. Redshirt sophomore
Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went 4-for-8 with a double and two runs scored.
On the mound, redshirt junior Jacob Tate (Louisville, Tenn.) was credited with the win in game one. Tate allowed three runs on six hits, retiring four batters. Sophomore
Tyler Peck (Oak Creek, Wis.) saved game one, shutting down the Cardinals' batters.
GAME ONE
The Bobcats got on the board first with a single from fifth year Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) to drive in a run, going up 1-0 after the first. Patino opened the third with a crushed ball over the right field fence to score a solo home run.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the fourth to tie the game, 2-2. Ohio took advantage of a pair of wild pitches to score two runs and retake the lead, going up 4-2. Ball State cut into the Bobcats' lead with a solo home run.
Patino was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, setting the score at 5-3. The Bobcats defense was able to shut down Ball State in the ninth, winning game one of the doubleheader 5-3.
GAME TWO
Ball State opened the scoring by taking advantage of a wild pitch. The Bobcats were quick to answer with a solo home run from Patino, tying the game 1-1.
Ohio's offense ignited in the second. Junior Owen Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) began the inning with a solo home run to give Ohio their first lead of the game. With the bases loaded, Patino reached on a fielder's choice, earning him his second RBI of the game and extending the lead. The Bobcats took advantage of a wild pitch to give them their third run of the inning, putting the score at 4-1.
The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the fifth. Redshirt sophomore
AJ Rausch (Powell, Ohio) regained the lead for the Bobcats off a solo home run. Ball State scored three runs in top of the seventh, going up 7-5.
Freshman Billy Adams (Medina, Ohio) singled to left center to get the Bobcats within one. Unable to score again, Ohio conceded game two, 7-6.
Up next, the Bobcats travel to Huntington, W.Va. May 9 to take on Marshall University. Tuesday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
