Ohio Softball Falls at Marshall in Midweek Matchup

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. –  The Ohio softball team (6-11) returned to action Wednesday afternoon, falling to Marshall (17-3), 6-4, at Dot Hicks Field.
 
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on five hits and did not commit an error, while Marshall scored six runs on nine hits and committed two errors.
 
Individually, senior Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while sophomore Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) went 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Freshman Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) added a hit and a run scored, while junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) had a hit, RBI and a run scored. Freshman Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) drew a walk and recorded on RBI and sophomore CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) drew a walk and scored a run. 
 
In the circle, redshirt freshman Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching six innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, while walking two and striking out two. 
 
Marshall took the lead early in the game, getting on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring one run on two hits to take a 1-0 lead to the second inning.  The Bobcats responded in the top of the second inning. After Dawe drew a walk to lead off the inning, sophomore Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) entered the game to run for her. Yuhas then stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, setting up an RBI triple from Hoffner to tie the game at 1-1 going into the bottom of the inning.
 
Marshall retook the lead in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, the Herd put runners on first and third with two outs, setting up an RBI single from Marshall to score the run from third. On the play, the Bobcats were able to throw out the lead runner trying to advance to third to end the inning, sending the game to the fourth with Ohio trailing, 2-1.  The Bobcats threatened to get the run back in the top of fourth after Dawe reached on an error. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize on the miscue, sending the game to the bottom of the frame still trailing, 2-1. 
 
The Herd added on in the bottom of the fourth inning after a two-run homerun increased Marshall's lead to 4-1. The Bobcats responded in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Keidel drew a walk and then moved to second on an infield single from Hummel. Then with two outs, Paoli singled to center, followed by an RBI double form Dawe to cut the Oho deficit to one. After senior Kaci Branch (Villa Park, Calif.) drew a walk to load the bases, Austy Miller drew a walk of her own to score Dawe, tying the game at 4-4 going to the bottom of the fifth inning.  
 
Marshall responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, retaking the lead on a two-RBI triple to put the Herd up 6-4 going into the sixth inning. Ohio tried to get the runs back in the top of the sixth inning when with one out, Keidel reached on an error. After Hummel reached on a fielder's choice, junior Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) drew a walk to put two runners on. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the frame with Marshall leading, 6-4. 
 
After a scoreless sixth inning from the Herd, Ohio looked to rally in the top of the seventh, however, the Bobcats were unable to generate any offense, falling to Marshall, 6-4. 
 
Up next, the Bobcats head to Cookeville, Tenn. March 10-11 for the 2023 Tennessee Tech Tournament. While there, Ohio will play four games in two days, taking on Robert Morris and Tennessee Tech.
